Of course it's an invite!! I'll let you sleep on my sofa! lol well, I'm sure we can organize a guest room.. I'll just kick the drums out the way and.. no wait, just looked over my shoulder there's enough place for a sleeper couch. Ha ha ha ha..
Well, MG and Soy, for Great White shark diving, Cape Town (convieniently where I happen to live) is the best place in the world. We get real monsters out here! Big fellows! The down side is that there's at least one fatal shark attack a year. We've got some amazing packages that offer cage diving. Water is the best here, clear and full of sharks, so.. come on down!
Oh and on the plus side, thanks to the global financial crisis, the rand is dropping so it's even cheaper to have an excellent holiday here..
Does anyone think I should've have given up writing and rather gone into the tourism industry?? Rofl!! I agree with you Deep Freeze--Ain't is a lazy word & it's one I use often --every time I try to break myself of it -it rears it's ugly head & strikes back--just a piece of Americana I think !! The word aint is a much maligned word, my friends. For many years, it was considered a non-standard word most often used habitually by the "less educated". However, it has certainly gained tremendous popularity, in the American lexicon at least. It is most often used to gain emphasis in writing and in speech. I admit, sheepishly, that I have used the word on occassion. And, as it was pointed out previously, you can find it in the dictionary.
My problem with the word is that I feel it demonstrates laziness. Just because it is in the dictionary does not give it credibility as a form of proper communication. I liken it more to the use of profanity, although I would certainly prefer aint to an obscene word anytime! Breaking up perfectly good words into lazy, psuedo-contractions is an abomination to our great language,my friends.
You are all aware of my fondness for good grammar and manners. The "war" you witnessed between Guido and I yesterday was all in fun and I truly believe there are one or two of you that may have actually learned something from the exchange! If this is so, we have accomplished much more than simply entertaining you for a short time! We have given you cause to think about your speaking habits. We have made you think about grammar.
We have helped to improve your lives, just a little. For surely, there is always room in our lives to improve our grammar and make ourselves a little bit better? We actually had a brief visit from a storm that cooled things off but we have not hit our "winter weather", yet. Here in Las Vegas, it does get quite cold but it is a very dead, silent cold. It is not "alive" like on the east coast, mid west and whatnot. In the desert, it is very dead, cold and still. I dislike it very much. Interesting that you would mention the weather and heat, Joe. We are expecting it to be near 90 today here in Vegas! Unseasonably warm, I believe they call it. Certainly not Africa but it is very warm here. |

Ok, kids...word of the day "euphemism." A euphemism is a substitution of an agreeable or less mean word or offensive expression in place of one that may offend or suggest something unpleasant to the listener, or in the case of doublespeak, to make it less troublesome for the speaker. Freeze claimed to have suffered "a momentary lapse, followed by a small misspeak." You and I know this by another phrase: "senior moment!"

Personally, I lean toward "a historical" as I do pronounce the "h" (as in hummingbird). The "h" is just begging for an "a" in font of it. [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Deep Freeze from Sunday, October 26, 2008 1:45:13 PM) | | Deep Freeze wrote: | | Well now Val, I am glad you asked!
Using "an" before historical has befuddled grammarians for centuries. The letter "h" is a glottal fricative, meaning it is pronounced by closing the glottis briefly. The "velar stop" is used in letters like "k". If you do not completely stop airflow when pronouncing, you get a velar fricative "ch", as used in the Scotish "loch". It is from this sound that we developed the "h" sound.
I mention all of this because it is a little known fact that, whether a word begins with a vowel or not does not firmly require the use of "an". In English grammar, the pronounciation is also part of the rule. Take, for example, the word "the". Depending on the article, we can pronounce it "thuh" or "thee".
It is important that speakers and writers understand the cadence or rhythm of a sentence is the key to proper speech. Edited at: Sunday, October 26, 2008 1:47:29 PM |

He used to come in to where I worked at the time with a floppy hat and sunglasses on. "BOARD" is a noun. If you reduced it to a pronoun it would, most likely, be it (depends on usage in the sentence). Proper nouns are distinguished from COMMON nouns in that they name something specific and, duh, begin with a capital letter.
Common noun: "The dog is cute." Proper noun: "Snoopy is cute."
Common noun: "Someone hit me with a board the other day." Proper noun: "I like to write on the JP.com Board!"
"Board," by any stretch of the imagination isn't a pronoun. If you can get a definite article "the" in front, you have a NOUN! The board. (Quoting Message by ronhartsell from Sunday, October 26, 2008 11:10:26 AM) Edited at: Sunday, October 26, 2008 11:32:28 AM |
