Same here........other than being on the net, did a little work and then got out of the house, drove into Bend (about 15 miles) went to Barnes and Noble and of course cried like a girl when I was told I'd have to wait on Al Atkins' spectacular new biography (NOT). Other than that today has been pretty quiet. Am missing my little boy who I have not seen in about 3 weeks now. Summers are rough for me because he's off with his mom. Long story. |

I'm a writer ( actually studying Journalim this year and next year) so I get excited when people speak about stuff they've written (lol) Selling 200 copies is quite an achievement! I see your point though about wanting to keep it 100% in your control though, editors can be brutal!

I have managed to sell around 200 copies which is about 199 more than I imagined I would ever sell, so I think I've done all right with it. Wow! that is increadible! I find volcanoes really interesting too. I watch as many documentaries on them as I can, considering the closest volcano I could get to is in Namibia so national geographic will have to do for me. I think to have witnessed Mount St Helens go up... speechless. An experience that will stay with you forever I'll bet.
Have you approached a publisher about getting your book more widely distributed? [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Tephra Rising from Sunday, June 22, 2008 3:40:47 PM) | | Tephra Rising wrote: | |
Yeah, if I had to claim two religions one would be Judas Priest heavy metal and the other would be climbing volcanoes. The Cascades have about a dozen smoking guns that run in a north-south line from the Canadian border down through Washington State and Oregon and into Northern California. I have climbed about half of them. Mount Saint Helens is the most famous of these, erupted in 1980. I got to watch it go off which was one of the most incredible things I have ever seen.
My favorite peak to climb is South Sister (of a closely-knit group called the Three Sisters) which I climb at least once every summer. Even wrote a short, handwritten book about it which got some local interest.

Ooops, forgot. I am from a bodaciously small town called Bluefield, VA. There is also a Bluefield, WV which is now almost empty since "King Coal" does not work out so well for the area anymore. The business is still booming but with automated systems being in place there are less jobs. The railroad is a good job if you can stomach being called out at anytime of day or night. I used to date an engineer for years and he seemed like the crabbiest person in the world sometimes. We do indeed have Lesotho surrounded! lol another very beautiful place should you ever get to see it.
However, sound like you live in paradise! I hear what you're saying about the wrong kinds of people moving into the area, that can really put a bummer on things. Don't give up on owning your own house there one day, I believe everything is possible eventually. We've also got horrific housing prices too at the moment but our housing market is about to collapse and housing will become cheaper pretty soon from now. \
Are you really a mountain climber? That is so cool!! I'm more into hiking, we never had anything major to climb nearby but we've got some killer hiking trails around. Anyway........I live in Central Oregon which is a beautiful place, a combination of pine forests topped by high, snowcapped dormant volcanoes, wild rivers and high desert. Big mecca for skiers, mountain bikers, hikers and mountain climbers (I'm in that last category). Unfortunately all this natural beauty has its downside......it's currently America's most over-priced housing market (which is why I will probably never be able to afford my own home here) and all the wrong kinds of people are moving here (and they keep on coming). But I consider it home, have moved away twice and regretted the move both times, so here I stay. |

Across the border in WV there is an entire county (pretty much) filled with crackheads. Anytime someone says they are from the "County" you know what county they mean. I live in a place I feel clueless when a new person moves here. Why would they do it? I'm lucky to have a job in this area and I cant understand anyone moving here. I must admit though I have move away a few times and miss it when I'm not here, but wow it takes some getting used to once you get into the faster paced lifestlye of other places. It is a good place to let my daughter grow up. Around here you can still leave your door unlocked and the chances of something happening are as great as being struck by lightining. A lot of that was fluctuations in the exchange rate. then from the late 90's to the mid 00's it was the other way, stuff here was comparitivly cheaper. we exported a ton of cars, now, we import from the US.
but, damn we pay a lot of taxes for our socialized medicare. I actualy think that today is the day i have paid all my taxes and get to keep the rest that I earn.

Don't give it a second thought. I had a girlfriend back in Massachusetts who had family in P.E.I. ( Prince Edward Island, Metal Jesus' home ) and even as far back as the '80s they would come down to the states and buy like crazy. I think the socialized medicine seriously devalues their economy. OK...now that I can't hear a word anyone's typing LOL. Yes that's one way to look at it. One life, and you've got to live it up, stand tall cuz you're young, and kinda proud. ect ect ect.

I think my mom is pretty tolerant to it, but she wouldn't hear it on a daily basis. She allows me to listen to what I like, as long as I do well in school. I only showed her Nostradamus CD because she knew about the prophet and thought he was very wise. If anything, she made fun of one of the songs.
As far as having something in common with your son at that level, I think its great!! The more you have in common with your son the more you two can bond, IMO.

Is your mom usually hip to heavy metal? I mean...I know my son thinks I'm a cool dad, and he also understands that I'm still his parent, and NOT his friend, but we have a blast so far together in life with each others company. That's been very important to me...that I could identify with him in whatever he may be going through. Am I taking that to a more intense level? Is it too much?

I think my mom is pretty tolerant to it, but she wouldn't hear it on a daily basis. She allows me to listen to what I like, as long as I do well in school. I only showed her Nostradamus CD because she knew about the prophet and thought he was very wise. If anything, she made fun of one of the songs.
As far as having something in common with your son at that level, I think its great!! The more you have in common with your son the more you two can bond, IMO.

Nope. I'm a girl with an "uptightness" problem. Is Vaillant suffering from lady trouble? If so, I feel for ya bro, 2 failed marriages under my belt and at 40 it isn't exactly getting easier to find Miss Right. Had a fantastic date with a great gal about 2 weeks ago, one of the best dates I think I've ever had, was really crazy about her but she let me know on no uncertain terms she didn't have those kind of feelings for me. So I can relate. I still search against all odds for Miss Right. Love sucks sometimes......(oh well, we were 200 miles apart anyway. Long-distance never seems to work for me.) |

Where to start ? As for the hair, I choose to go down with dignity. If some of my personal heroes ( Rob Halford, Mark Martin, etc. ) can handle it so can I.
As for Vail, unless there is something she hasn't mentioned to me ( and that's entirely posible ) I don't think there is lady trouble, but only she can answer that. Please excuse me a moment Vail for this next comment please.
I'm assuming we're talking about baldness? Also assuming Tephra Rising's a male. Let me tell you what my teacher said to me one day that may make you feel better. He was proud of his baldness, because he blamed it on his wife rubbing his head while he ate her out over all the years!
Yeah he was a cool person, and my favorite teacher. The same teacher who saw Led Zeppelin open for The Who back in the early 70's. |

Don't worry about Dokken. I have found in the metal world you either love 'em or hate 'em. Vaillant already knows my story of Priest with Don Dokken opening that I caught on the Painkiller tour in Alaska in 1991. I think Priest/Ryche 3 years ago is about the closest one to that. Another spectacular concert.
My "live baptism of Priest" was during the Turbo tour in Tacoma, WA, 1986 (Rob with a mullet, hahaha) The opener: Dokken. |

I imagine that's an easier thing to do than replace Don, but then again this band was always Don's baby. Oh those rock star egos. What is one to do???
Vaillant already knows my story of Priest with Don Dokken opening that I caught on the Painkiller tour in Alaska in 1991. I think Priest/Ryche 3 years ago is about the closest one to that. Another spectacular concert.
My "live baptism of Priest" was during the Turbo tour in Tacoma, WA, 1986 (Rob with a mullet, hahaha) The opener: Dokken. |

That can be frustrating. I had a similar experience when I tried to share Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime" with my parents. They called it "subversive counter culture paranoia". As you can tell by the fact that I remember that, it left an impression. I had always thought my parents were more intelligent and open than that. On the latter part of your post Vail. Yes, that's what my life/relationship w/my son's been all about. Connecting on a level that's relevant to both of us. I can also say it's part of a good marriage, or frindship. Years change people, but it's important to keep some things in common, while expecting the changes life in general puts each of us through. Well...keep in mind...she's the mother of 10. Me being the youngest, and most being of the "hippie generation". She's heard Ozzy from Black Sabbath thru his solo career, and still can't understand his singing. Plus the music's too fast, & loud for her taste....but that day she "got it". I certainly can see that point, but I want (as any good parent should) him to be better than me. I just don't push as some parents do...and I feel when pushed too far it becomes a rebellion on the part of the kid. Thus undermining the intention of the parent. I laughed too until it aired at 8 pm. The power came on about 2 minutes after and a DWP truck came to the house to make sure we had power. I guess the pen is indeed mightier than the sword. That was cool!!! I shared my Nostradamus CD with my mom on the car today on the way to the store. She heard the 1st CD, from Dawn of Creation to War. She seems to have liked it!! It used to be about mid 80's all summer but with the change in the weather we see alot of 90 and above days now and not much goes on in the winter like it used to. I had a really cheap friend who did the same thing only she only brought some sample bottles with her and she was white as snow.
She looked like a swirly artwork at the end of the day, and she got her oversized bathing suit she bought because it was on sale hung on the deck cleat when she jumped in the water. It was rather like watching Wiley Coyote stretch back in his rubber band and then have everything go SMACK! and break. Thong thong blue...OUCH my eye! Bloody thong!
But seriously folks, where the hell were this lady's legs when she was attempting to put her thong on? I think it most likely she was lying flat on her back with her legs up in the air. [shuddering at the slightly disturbing image I painted for everyone here]. I think it's time for bed.
