Guido, I think your advice is actually better... Oh my bruised ego! lol. No seriously though, you make a whole lot of sense right there. Go with Guido's vote Vail!

I say the FIRST book if you haven't yet read the prequel. Sounds really more like Silence of the Lambs than Star Wars. They made subsequent movies to the first then the prequel "Hannibal" showing what the young lad went through to bring him to his loony state in Silence. I own it but haven't seen it yet. No real desire either.

Reading a later novel before the first will distort how you view the second in the temporal order in which it was composed. So there is MY vote...read the first he wrote.

I'd go with the prequel but that's just me... Then again.. Star Wars.. Feck, I hate having to make decisions like this... Ok how about you put both books in front of you mix them around with your eyes closed and then just point to one, when you open your eyes you read whichever one you ended up pointing to.. no cheating allowed!

Good morning, ladies and gents of the Noticeboard! Hope everyone had a good day yesterday. It has been an interesting past 9 years, hasn't it?

Anyway, right now I have a tiny dilemna on my hands: three months ago I bought a book written by an author that was recommended to me by a TA at school. Just recently I decided to wiki the author to find out more about him and his works. Turns out the book I bought is a prequel to another book he wrote years earlier.

So...what should I read first? The prequel or its predecessor (heh)? Any ideas?

Let's hope not, Becks. I also sit on a fault line which is one of the most active in the USA. They have been calling for another "big one" for some time but, so far, nothing major. Still, I do have earthquake insurance on the house.

Protect yourself to the best of your abilities...only thing you can do.

BTW, on a different note I also think that the kid on the road painting is INSANE! Yet another example of a horrible idea thanks to the powers that be.

What a stupid idea, man that would be terrifying!!!

Well there's been many (around 300) aftershocks in Christchurch since last weekends big quake, and we had an earthquake up here today, only small, I felt it at work. But it makes me very worried that something very very very bad is going to happen to my beautiful home land soon.

Jeez...isn't that a leettle too much? A 3D fake kid running out in front of a driver?? Even as a bike-rider I'd swerve out of control. Guess the good news here is that it's only temporary.

Happy Hump Day to all the ladies and gents of the Noticeboard!!

That is insane! I am so glad I don't live there!

' "You're probably not expecting kids to run into the road" '. Well, since it's outside a primary school I think most people would expect just that. What I would not expect is little girls appearing and disappearing in front of my eyes!

Shocking new 3D speed bump illusion of girl crossing the road that suddenly 'appears' in front of drivers

By Niall Firth
Last updated at 4:08 PM on 8th September 2010

It sounds like a terrifying experience that would make even the most seasoned of drivers panic or even crash.

But a school in Canada is using a bizarre 3D optical illusion of a young girl crossing the road to try and make drivers slow down.

The image of a girl chasing after a ball is painted on the road and elongated to make it appear three-dimensional when seen from an approaching car.

The image of a girl rears up out of the road to alert drivers to their speed

The image of a girl rears up out of the road to alert drivers to their speed

Critics say that the child’s image could surprise drivers so much that they will slam on the brakes or even swerve off the road if they do not realise the girl is just an illusion.

At a distance it just looks like a marking on the road but when the car is 30 metres away it appears to suddenly rise up from the road.

When the driver is closer than 30 metres the image appears to sink back into the road.

If a car is travelling at the speed limit for the road, 30km/h, then he should be able to stop in time before he reaches the image.

Safety experts say the alarming image is designed to teach drivers to always be prepared for the unexpected.

The illusion is to be placed on the road outside École Pauline Johnson Elementary School in West Vancouver in Canada and will be accompanied by a sign which reads: ‘You’re probably not expecting kids to run into the road.’

Council bosses in the area say that the illusion will encourage drivers to drive defensively, as though a child could run out into the road at any moment.

The image will be removed after a week.

How cool, HB. You are a very lucky guy. Watching Michigan State play football this weekend made me homesick. What I wouldn't give to be back in my old stomping grounds. Sadly, there is the little problem called "work."

Speaking of which, no holiday for you Becks? Labor Day gives most of us the day off in the US. Federal holiday. Too bad the economy here gives many a permanent holiday.
