You are a bit off there, DF. "Downtown" Detroit is absolutely beautiful. Great neighborhoods. Mostly upscale and costs a MINT the closer you get to the Detroit River. Perfectly safe. TRUE problems actually happen in "no man's land" in the outskirts. THOSE folks couldn't get Downtown if they tried. They were really cast into poverty once the expressways were built. Made once thriving neighborhoods into places of abject poverty because they basically ran the roads from the sprawling mansions of the suburbs (where the rich set up shop) to the factories and downtown without making offramps. The poor factory workers were forced to live all around the factories as there is only one main road / bus route. THOSE are the places you don't want to go unless you know the area / someone.
Still, all pale in comparison to a city like Rio de Janeiro. Largest slums in the world there. You have not seen "poor" or "violent" until you have been there. Go rent "Cidade de Deus" (City of God) or "Tropa de elite" (Elite squad) to get the SLIGHTEST idea.
As you say, though, common sense in any major city adds to the "safety" level no matter the country.

Strat, yes! Here we pay to go to school unless we get a scholarship. I did not. I was very fortunate to have well-to-do family. That is they way it is here. As for the dangers of California, it is no different than any other large city. I think it gets an over abundance of exposure because of Hollywood and whatnot but it is no big deal. Nothing like downtown Philly or Detroit!! HA!!!!!!!!!! Ask Darth or guido! I lived south of LA in the Orange county area (yes, the same as that silly TV show!). It was more "upscale" than many places. In fact, there were maybe five blacks in my entire high school! (not that blacks are not upscale! Save that!) Anyway, we had a very nice home and all the normal facts of life. No drugs. No dad beating mom. No going without dinner. In fact, my dad is retired career law enforcement (Sheriff dept). VERY conservative upbringing , mine!....
Oh, and we did NOT recycle then either! HAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

When I was a young man, we rode the bus every weekend to the beach to go surfing. During summer vacation, we were on the bus just about everyday. It was a different time then. Not so many lunatics to deal with and the bus was not a big deal. Nowadays (at least here in the US) kids look down upon those that would ride the bus. The Princess has an older son (about 20) that would rather drive a shard of glass through his neck than step on the bus. It is disgusting, really. But, I am old and I know nothing of being a "cool" kid, right?
I received my first car as a birthday present when I turned 16. I have owned my own car ever since.
As for recycling...well, see my previous umpteen posts regarding the subject. I don't do it. That's that.

Recycling... Well, it is a good idea. But I guess were just not used to it. There is always the potential fine-if-I-get-caught-not-recycling thingy to consider. Unlikely, but possible.

It is quaint and I like to "people watch". It is actually fun. Cable cars in 'Frisco, subway in New York. Horse-drawn carriage in Toronto. But as far as my day to day life, I choose to drive.
Recycling is not a bad idea. I just do not take the time to do it. By nature, I am rather lazy and simply do not care that much. Terribly rude, I know but as you mentioned, I am being honest. And I am serious about the people that pick through my refuse. They do a much better job than I would.

Well, I don't know how much of what I do is 'green' or 'convieniant', but I do recycle cans as they take up too much space in the trash can, hence more frquent trips to the alley...I carpool to and from work and chip in a few bucks for gas, much less expensive and I don't have to be responsible for anything other than walking out the front door...and because my sis-in-law only lives a few blocks away, we usually go to the grocery store (or whever) together...so I think what I do is to benefit me, but it does help out a little as well...
...ps, we have some of the cleanest, best tasting water in the world, straight out of Lake Michigan!!! Has anyone ever tried well water?? ugh... |

Strat, yes! Here we pay to go to school unless we get a scholarship. I did not. I was very fortunate to have well-to-do family. That is they way it is here. As for the dangers of California, it is no different than any other large city. I think it gets an over abundance of exposure because of Hollywood and whatnot but it is no big deal. Nothing like downtown Philly or Detroit!! HA!!!!!!!!!! Ask Darth or guido! I lived south of LA in the Orange county area (yes, the same as that silly TV show!). It was more "upscale" than many places. In fact, there were maybe five blacks in my entire high school! (not that blacks are not upscale! Save that!) Anyway, we had a very nice home and all the normal facts of life. No drugs. No dad beating mom. No going without dinner. In fact, my dad is retired career law enforcement (Sheriff dept). VERY conservative upbringing , mine!....
Oh, and we did NOT recycle then either! HAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Not so many lunatics to deal with and the bus was not a big deal. Nowadays (at least here in the US) kids look down upon those that would ride the bus. The Princess has an older son (about 20) that would rather drive a shard of glass through his neck than step on the bus. It is disgusting, really. But, I am old and I know nothing of being a "cool" kid, right?
I received my first car as a birthday present when I turned 16. I have owned my own car ever since.

Recycling is not a bad idea. I just do not take the time to do it. By nature, I am rather lazy and simply do not care that much. Terribly rude, I know but as you mentioned, I am being honest. And I am serious about the people that pick through my refuse. They do a much better job than I would.

DF, I am ashamed that you do not do your part for the environment and recycle.  Personally, I recycle...hell, everyone I know recycles! How could you NOT recycle? That makes no sense man!
My parents bought me my first car, and the next two after that (2 wrecks and the other one just died). Mind you, I was 17 when I got my first car....a 1977 Chevrolet Impala "The Tank" if you will. It had NO steering and you HAD TO HAVE both hands on the steering wheel at all times. The first new car I ever owned was my 98 Honda Civic. 265,000+ miles and not a problem. I miss that car almost as much I miss my dog.
Taking the bus, the EL (elevated train) and the subway are necessities in big cities like Philadelphia, NYC. Young and old take them. Show this to your stepson, Freeze!

Well, I know you have tap water. I am shocked, tho, that it isnt safe to drink. I really cant imagine drinking bottled water every day. As for public transport, the math is simple really. If I was to buy a car, I would have to spend at least 2 to 3 thousand € just for the car (used car, at least 10 years old, probably French or Italian). Plus some 500€ on registration, and a fortune on gas (which is almost twice as expensive here than at your end). On the other hand, the bus pass costs me 17€ per month. What am I going to choose? And I dont even have to drive the damn thing.
Recycling... Well, it is a good idea. But I guess were just not used to it. There is always the potential fine-if-I-get-caught-not-recycling thingy to consider. Unlikely, but possible.

It is quaint and I like to "people watch". It is actually fun. Cable cars in 'Frisco, subway in New York. Horse-drawn carriage in Toronto. But as far as my day to day life, I choose to drive.
Recycling is not a bad idea. I just do not take the time to do it. By nature, I am rather lazy and simply do not care that much. Terribly rude, I know but as you mentioned, I am being honest. And I am serious about the people that pick through my refuse. They do a much better job than I would.

Where did you live then? I mean, I can hardly imagine taking a bus from Nevada to the nearest coast for the weekend. Wish I could do that, tho. The curse of the Adriatic sea - little wind, and what there is is not strong enough to make waves big enough to surf on.

When I was a young man, we rode the bus every weekend to the beach to go surfing. During summer vacation, we were on the bus just about everyday. It was a different time then. Not so many lunatics to deal with and the bus was not a big deal. Nowadays (at least here in the US) kids look down upon those that would ride the bus. The Princess has an older son (about 20) that would rather drive a shard of glass through his neck than step on the bus. It is disgusting, really. But, I am old and I know nothing of being a "cool" kid, right?
I received my first car as a birthday present when I turned 16. I have owned my own car ever since.
As for recycling...well, see my previous umpteen posts regarding the subject. I don't do it. That's that.

There are enough people going through my garbage to make certain that it gets properly seperated. I am too freakin OLD to try to string a clothesline and, in all honesty, I happen to like to get from place to place in my car. That is why I bought the damn thing. You guys do the "earth saving", OK? I truly do not plan to live long enough to reap it's benefits anyway.......BWWWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!! |
