Oh, one other thing. One of the coolest scales, in my opinion, is the combination of the Blues Scale and the Natural Minor Scale. The simple Blues Scale is 1-4,1-3,1-3,1-3,1-4,1-4. Try this one. Let's say we start on A on the 6 string. So, by fret, it goes 5-7-8, 5-7-8, 5-7, 4-5-7, 5-6-8, 5-7-8. With the addition of a little tail. If you start on the G string with the 4-5-7 you can then slide up to the 9th fret and finish it off with the blues scale on the B and E strings with 8-10, 8-10.
Very George Lynch. |

One little trick that may come in handy. You can really turn the tables on people if you understand that if you are in the Key of G major you are, in essence, also in the Key of E minor. Three steps ( frets ) back and that's the relative minor key. Now that's when you start to make "Mary had a little lamb" sound like "Get on your knees and pray" ! I have the Seymour Duncan Distortion in the bridge and the Vintage Staggered in the neck of my BC Rich.I just rewired the guitar on Tuesday ,had a ground hum. All is good now.I love those ADA preamps, they are so versatile!!
Good choice on the power amp also. A tube is a tube, but the wiring in the chasuis is what makes the difference. Peavey has some grat stuff.i`m constantly watching E-bay for an older Script model 5150 head.
You mentioned the Classic 50, alot of older players seem to like that amp, Never played thru one that I can remember. The newer Valve Kings do have a good vintage tone ,but with a modern edge when using that A/B control on the power amp. Rectifier tubes do just that ,they rectify (controlling voltage) They change AC to DC and feed the power tubes their operating voltage. Now when you dig in hard to play, the tubes will "sag" due to the rectifier tube not completely keeping up the voltage to the tubes. This gives kind of a natural compression. EVH would drive his tubes above and beyond with output power, but would limit his input voltage to the amp with a variac. This was very much the "key" to his brown sound back then.
Now amps that use a "silicon diode" chip to supply the voltage are much more consistent with their output. Go to
www.mesaboogie.com and look at the Road King head,it gives you a choice between the recifier tube or the silicon diode.
The rectifier tubes are really an old school way of doing things(but damn it sounds good!!)
Some classic Marshall Reissues have a recifier tube, like the Jemi hendrix model and I`m not sure about anymore. I`m not sure of the exact model I played thru at a little shop.I believe it was the Seville(?).I know that it had the 6L6`s as they were large tubes. The 6V6`s are not as small in relation to the6L6`s as the 84`s are to the 34`s.The EL-34`s are not that big anyway.
I believe the 5AR4 is the rectifier tube in this case, rather than the 12at7. But I could be wrong here...?
But that amp I played had one 12 that was off center , there was enough room for two 12`s in there though.

An amp like that is for the purists among us that only true tube tone will do.I have played thru a similiar amp that Fender has and it`s a very good little amp.
Modifying Fender amps is how Randall Smith got his start ,and now look where Mesa Boogie is at. It all has to start somewhere, and a small amp like this is a good place to start, now if it weren`t so expensive!! I am also a guy that had only two guitars over my gigging years, made me appreciate what I had!! I had 5 at one time as a teenager, but they were all copiesof various models ,not the real deal. Yeah,I'm not a big fan of Flying Vs either, just don't like the feel of them, awkward to me but to others like Ken,they fit them perfectly.Just never been to hip on those ..I agree.

Phantom would be an awesome guitar. It is definitely a guitar that I would buy if I wanted a new guitar AND had a chance to buy one. GT or A5, doesn't really matter. Original A5 might be quite interesting actually... |
