Uh oh, 1-0 GER...
[Becks] Wednesday, June 23, 2010 12:46:18 PM
Germany just scored an excellent goal - 1-0 in that game now.
[ron h] Wednesday, June 23, 2010 12:20:26 PM
Be careful what you wish for Strat, you just might get it  lol.  We're not great by any means, but we're not bad either.  We haven't come close to playing our best yet, and we're undefeated.  We've also been lucky.

The off-sides we complain about should be tempered by the fact that if we don't catch a lucky goal against ENG, our tourney would be over even with today's win.

Well 0-0 for both games at half time. Hope there's some more exciting football in the next 45 minutes! LOL!

Im rooting that Serbia finishes second in this group - that way they get the US. No better motivation than I can think of.

Refs never call games of their own countries.

There are two assistant refs on the sides, that see very well any offsides, and they usualy inform the main ref about them.

Ah bugger, Serbia just scored but it was offside. Oh well, try again LOL!
It'll be interesting once this mornings matches are over, to see who is playing the US and England in the group of 16.

Mhm - it would be good if you could beat Paraguay with a big difference, and then for Slovakia to beat Italy with a big difference... Odds are against it, but it can happen, and I hope it does.

Damn, Im sick of this combinations... I cant wait for the knock-out phase.

I tend to like the human element with regards to officiating, no matter the sport.  I think we've all been on both sides of a bad call and it's weird because we only complain when it goes against us, yet cheer when we get lucky.

ALL of these off-sides calls are pure judgement calls as the action is fast and they have to make calls in a split-second.  We fans watching on the TV really only know after seeing the slow-motion replay.  'Off-sides' seems to be the big difference maker this year, for a number of teams and not just the U.S.  Although that sucks, there's been triple as many shots on goal going off the bar instead of in the net, I'm more concerned about that!!

I tend to think the sport needs better traing, maybe more ref's on the field or ref's not calling games of their own home countries (maybe that's a rule that's already in place, I don't know).  What I do know is that if the U.S. made the goals they should have throughout the tournament, today would not have been so critical a match.
[Becks] Wednesday, June 23, 2010 12:02:46 PM
Yeah I was just looking at the table, a whole bunch of scenarios could happen this morning. I'm just looking forward to 2am tomorrow morning NZ time - NZ vs Paraguay! If we win, we're through! Who would have thought, LOL!

The thing is that sometimes, those "mistakes" are not mistakes. It happens sometimes that a referee is genuinely biased, and can screw up a team. As I said, in football, a referee is a powerfull figure.

That said, no I dont get ESPN (whatever that is), I watch the games on our national television - where the commentators have a lot to say about referees too. Now, we lost today 1-0 to England, and guess who the first scapegoat is? The referee.

Personaly, I think that all this bitching about referees is just talk of sore losers, or in case of the US (which now isnt a loser - yet), they were already preparing to have  a scapegoat in case they did lose. IDK - I say that we all know more or less what the rules are, and we can make our own opinions about the referees and their decisions. Yeah, there were tournaments in the past where referees were bad, but this one is nothing compared to those.

As for doing something about it... Well, I daresay there is no need. Fans will just have to accept that most of the times referees are not to blame. Sometimes they are, but usualy not.
[Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Deep Freeze from Wednesday, June 23, 2010 11:16:16 AM)
[Deep Freeze] Wednesday, June 23, 2010 11:16:16 AM
As I have mentioned in the past, I do NOT believe that blaming an official is EVER acceptable! Even if they DO make a mistake (which they do).  The thing is, there is a remarkable abundance of discussion here on American TV regarding the poor officiating. I am watching ESPN and I assume that is what you all get over there as well? If so, I should think you would notice it also? It is rather annoying.

There are mistakes made by players, coaches AND officials. It happens. It is part of the "human element" I have mentioned. It just seems that poor officiating is the MAIN topic of discussion everyday!  I mean, this must be a real problem with the game because they refer consistently to previous Cup matches and they go on and on about poor calls.  If this is such an issue, implement "instant replay"! Jeez! They just go on and on about the officials. I was watching the US game this morning and the ref "disallowed" a goal which set off yet ANOTHER barrage of complaining about the officials. Replace them. Shoot them. Do SOMETHING! If it is so bad that it continues to be the biggest news in the tournament, DO something about it.

Well, its true that in football a referee is a very independant figure, and rules are sometimes very lax just to give the ref space to make his own decisions. What you also have to take into consideration is that blaming the referee is a very common practice of sore loosers. Now, sometimes the ref really is biased, and they can change the game completely, but I dont think that that happend in this cup. Yet.

Well, pretentious pricks they may be... But US and England deserve to go on. Our team was an utter disapointment. I really think that they were too comfortable today, and went for a draw, then ended up losing everything. They didnt deserve to win after todays performance. Too bad.

Now, looking forward to the evening, I hope that at least Serbia can save the honor of the Yugoslavian school of football.
[Deep Freeze] Wednesday, June 23, 2010 7:37:44 AM
Yes, strat. I do say a lot of things. Like to hear myself talk, I guess...HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! In all honesty, I believe I have finally figured out why this game has not caught on in the US. I mean, the officiating is god-awful! I still have NO idea what I am watching but the announcers are going on AGAIN about the ref making ANOTHER poor call!! It seems as though that is ALL I hear! Now then, there ARE poor calls in every sport but, by and large, the officiating is very good in OUR sports. NOTHING like this, anyway!

Perhaps they need to better review how they pick the officials for this game? I am not sure but I keep hearing this over and over and these announcers are NOT just Americans with a grudge. These are guys from all over the world! They are STILL going on about the "terrible" call that just cost the US a "goal"...??!??!!? Then they start in about 2002 and whatnot so, apparently, this is an ongoing issue? Certainly can see why this is not of much interest here in the States. Maybe they need "instant replay" or something? Maybe a test for referees? I have no idea. Just seems as though the real story continues to be the refs. THAT is sad.

Well, if they got all the cards that they earned, they would have been down to ten by halftime. I hope that the ref on the US - Algeria match wont tolerate such dirty playing.

Abyway, Im rooting that our team and the Algerians win today, and advance. England mustnt go through in any case.

Ok, tomorrow... Is the decision day! Im rooting for our boys to beat England, and the Algerians to beat the US. We need a draw or a win, or even a defeat (it then depends on the outcome of the US - Algeria game) to advance.

In group D, I will be rooting for Serbia (hopefully they can take out Australia) and Ghana (good luck against Germany). It would be great that if we go on, that Serbia finishes in the same place in their group as we will in ours, that way we wont meet in the round of 16.

First fixtures for the round of 16 too: South Korea vs. Urugvay (go Korea) and Mexico vs. Argentina (go Mexico).

Well, too bad for SA... I was really hoping that they will advance. But I guess that today it was a bit too much. I mean, they would have to win with four goals of difference, considering the result of the other game. Still, no matter what state the French team is in, this is a victory to remember.

Well, I cant wait till tomorrow. The euphoria here is reaching its climax, and if we fail to go to the next round it will probably mean a national disaster.

I am so proud of our boys. We may not be going through to the next round but we played one hell of a game!
Stupid french goalie.. catching all our balls lol.

I knew that we weren't strong enough to go all the way but we needed this win today to go out in style so to say..
I am proudly South African today and now we can go back to being the best host country in WC history!
So far all the tourists I've enountered have thoroughly enjoyed being here.
I'm happy tonight and ready to pop the champagne to celebrate the great game played by our guys! Can't call them boys anymore they are men now!

It's Ayoba time! Lemme go blast my vuvuzela in support!

Thanks for rooting for our boys Vail xxx
