ABOUT HOW I DISCOVERED JUDAS PRIEST MUSIC
I remembered that in my childschool i loved rap music and my favorite artist was Dr.Alban and in my teenagers year i loved pop music and my favorite artist was Michael Jackson(God Bless him)and i remembered that in that period of teenager year,in 2000,i met my first boyfriend,Lucian Videscu,a libra sign, born at 12 ocotber,4 years older than me then, with which i got in time the most serious and long relationship, about more than 8 years, with which i worked togeter in his firm and i lived togeter in my parents house, and which unfortunately,is not around us anymore, cause he died in 2007,on 17 july,in Italy,Brescia, where was to work for a while, and from where he came back in Romania to me,in coffin, but what i wanted to say is that my boyriend was a ROCKER man,and then i even didn't liked the rock music,i was about rapp,hip-hop,dance,pop,etc...I even remembered how strange i felt when i met that rocker man,i was in my last year of highschool, and then he worked in a rock store, and my sister knew him more early than me,she used to visit his store cause she liked him,and she wanted to be with him,and one day in the breaktime of our classes,my sister ask me to go with her at his store, cause she wanted to show him to me,to tell her my opinion about him,so we gone, and when we arrived at his store and i saw him,i man with long long hair, with all clothes broken on him,i tell her:"My god this is the man with which you want to be???"but what was strange was the fact that more late, this rocker man became my boyfriend untill he died, because in that day in when he saw me in the store,a girl with short hair and dressed like a rapper one,he fallin in love with me,and he told my sister to not upset but he dont want to be with her,but with me,and my sister told me that later, and then i think:"My god this is the man with which i will be???"and that was, untill he died, but i never regret this choice, because even if we were different,he with the rock music, and me with rap,and pop,we understood each other good,in bussiness but in love too,and he was a special man,how few are in our days,a powerfull one in the social life, which knew what he wanted from this life, and also a romantic one in the private life, which knew to keep me around him with simple things such as flowers, love letters,songs,etc...and carring me,respect me and loving me,just me,till the day he died, and probably know from where he is,should be very proud about the rocker woman which i became, but not because of him,and i am very sad that he is not around us to see that, but probbaly he will feel bad, because i became this because of other man, which discovered me the rock music, and also Judas Priest band.
I remember that was happen, now 4 years ago, some time after his death, when i met one of my actualy best friends here in my town, named Gianny Painkiller,a aquarian man,2 years older than me,and a rocker fan and a Judas Priest fan,and i remembered when we met,he was a rocker and me with my same rap and pop,but that was not an impediment to became best friends untill today,i remember the way how we met, then he was a meteoroligist man which came down from the montains where he worked as meteoroligsi togeter with his last girlfriend but who cheated him,and they break the relation and he came down in town, and he gave an newspaper announcement for searching a new woman, and i was after my breaking of my ex.man who died, and i felt alone, and i need it a friend and i answered at his annoucement an since then we became best friends untill today,a friend from which i got the love for rock music, for Judas Priest, and many other, such as the passion for travels, and photography.I remembered the day when we met on a restaurant and we spoke ech other the lifes stories and he told me he like rock music and Judas Priest. Some time after, one day when he came in my house,he put me the Judas Priest tape British Steel album, and the Priest live dvd,and he ask my opinion, and i told him i dont like them style, and neither the albums, the songs, neither the voice of Rob,nothing. Some time late,he put me again these, and after i re-listen,i told him i like little them stile, and little the song Breaking the Law,and little the voice of Rob,and the same way was happen with the Fight band and Halford, which i didn' like at the first listening, but just late, but what is strange is that since then and till today they are my soul band, and Rob Halford my soul artist, and i am proud i discovered them,i am proud i got a small corespondence with Miss Jayne their manager, which passed all my letter to the band, and i am proud that i have all their music in original,i am proud i was at their first show in Romania,i am proud i got an autograph from Mr.Scott Travis, and finnaly i am proud i had dedicated and i administer for they some of net pages, about i invite you to look over ,such these below, and finnaly i will be proud to see one day again the Judas Priest somewhere in Romania, and also the Halford band in my city Arad,at our Rock on Mures Festival,at Port Arthur, and to met Rob Halford,to salute him,to thanks him for his music, and to give him my sorries for all my fan crazzines, and also to get an photo with autograph from him,and just like a crazziness, still dream to colaborate in music with him.

I was afraid to see this kind of thread here, as reply would surely expose my age...
Lets just say, early seventies... when even my friends flamed me when said this is and will be something great!
Humiliation of those days was almost unbearable. Of course, a dose of JP helped me thru it. |

Said this yrs ago - but will repeat - it was at a schoolmates house, just after Sad Wings came out, his bro was like 'Mr. Popular' and had all these rock albums...we listened, but Sad Wings ruled them all. My dear wife imparted to me in later years that she saw the tour with Budgie...which i would have donated a testicle to attend. MY first attendence at a JP gig was far later...prolly '81 when Maiden supported..but at least i got backstage (i was roadie)...to comment on JP's attitude to fans would piss ppl off...so i won't. Let's just say some bands are open/friendly..and don't use a battalion of security b4 u can even say hi.... |

35 years,I think? Since my brother went out and bought Rocka Rolla and Sad Wings of Destiny and I thought WOW! I was only 16 but I went to see the band AND I met them. KK was wearing his famous hat and I'll always remember how nice the guys were. |

1978, I was into Aerosmith (Back In The Saddle) and thought that was kick ass guitar. Then a new friend threw a cassette (remember those) of Unleased In The East and I was BLOWN AWAY. Priest was (and continue to be) the true and only Metal Gods! With Halford's vocals and unbelievable range and Downing and Tipton ripping rifts that still seem impossible! I saw Priest at the Long Beach Arena (CA) in 1980 and have NEVER stopped being a dedicated fan. I have seen Priest over 40 times in concert and they never disappoint. My wife and three children are a Priest Family and see them every year that they tour! |

I see. That certainly is a way of looking at it. I agree that Priest have always been innovative and intricate. I have always enjoyed how they do not use vulgarity in their lyrics, for example. Taking the "high road", as it were. The composition of the music is technical and well. It shows how talented the Band really is.
Again, I am not one of those that "hates" Nostra nor do I think it is a "bad" album. It is technical genius, for sure. It has layers and deepness that only a few bands can pull off anyway. I just do not care for it. I was not and I am still not a fan of the "Ripper" years. Not that I dislike Tim Owens, just that I do not care for the musical direction the Band took during that period. Far more "NU" Metal sounding, to me. Far less technical and melodic. Just my observations.
I appreciate your opinion. No need to fear that anyone would get angry. This is an intelligent discussion and I like that. We need not agree on every, single aspect to have a good chat about it. OK, now that I'v gone more into Priest music, I can see that they'v been seeking and experimenting all along, and they certainly have formed metal much more than metalheads outside of the Priest community are willing to acknowledge. There definitely is some unusual intelligence in several of the Priest guys.
When I hear Nostra, I get the picture of highly intelligent and innovative musicians, who have always been ahead of their big fanbase, but during those 40 years never willing to take the big risk that's probably been at the back of their minds for long. You hear some of it coming along in Jugulator and Angel.
The big risk is what Floyd took with all their Waters-albums, and thus they created masterpieces all along.
Now Priest have made that jump into the unknown ... and have been surprisingly successful with it imo. I think it's fully justified to compare Nostra with The Wall. They'r similar in many ways, except that the music is so clearly Priest's, and Priest's alone, nobody else comes close - they really broke ground with this one. People will be talking about Nostra for decades to come - I'm certain about that !!!
This might not be the right place to have this discussion, but I'v been on so many boards, and sufficiently thru the fave this and that, and I certainly prefer a discussion like this one. Hope nobody is disgruntled

Well, that is certainly one point of view. I mean, I cannot say for certain what was in their minds but I do recall past discussions regarding this subject and the varying thoughts.
Quite frankly, it is not all that "surprising" to me. Perhaps it is simply a matter of doing what they want rather than churning out one "heavy" album after another. Pink Floyd did "The Wall", The Who has "Tommy". It is not anything new for a big name act to do a concept album. Its almost as if the guys decided they wanted to express themselves in a more creative and in-depth fashion. I really cannot say. Surely they can write heavy albums just as quickly as we write a letter. In fact, they likely have several songs already written. I believe Glenn has mentioned that they have a lot of material that does not make albums and ends up saved for future endeavors.
I am not a huge fan of Nostra. I don't "hate" it but it is not among my favorites. That does not mean it is a bad album. It is just not my "cup of tea", so to speak. I see on the board that some Priest fans recognise their beloved group in Nostra, some even find this change exciting, and others are disappointed.
And I understand the disappointment: I see that lotta, maybe most, Priest fans are into groups like Maiden, Testament, Megadeth, Slayer, and AC/DC. For my part, I like Slayer somewhat, but the other four groups don't do much for me.
Otoh I expect that Nostra is attracting an entirely different crowd: proggies (like me) - fans of Dream Theater, Symphony X, Queensrÿche, maybe even Arena.
I'm utterly surprised and dumbstruck by the fact that Rob & Co. made such a radical turn almost 40 years into their career, the guys being in their fifties. Unbelievable - I don't think anything like that's ever happened before ! The closest I can think of is Johnny Cash, who churned out endless albums with monotonous country stuff (hey, I didnt say "crap"), and then just before the end, together with Rick Rubin, made the amazingly deep, spiritual American Recordings
Nicky.

That's interesting, given that Nostra was not as well received as so many albums before it. Still, I do believe it has its moments of brilliance and certainly it is not a "bad" album. I recall hearing Sad Wings back in the early 70's and being just blown away. I actually bought Sin After Sin first, I think..(Oh, so long ago for an aging Metalhead) Nonetheless, it should think it really doesn't matter how you got here, so long as you are!
I don't think I will ever forget Unleashed, though. That album just put me "over the edge". I had graduated high school and was starting college and I remember playing that damn thing constantly!
Quite frankly Nicky, you're HERE so you have earned your Priesthood as far as I am concerned!!! i'm a new fan or a NU fan as some of you folks like to call us. It all started back in 2003. I was 14 and a buddy gave me Edward The Great(Iron Maiden hits package) and Living After Midnight(obviously Judas Priest hits package). The priest hits I enjoyed so much more and listened to it all the time. The maiden one pretty much became a novelty on my shelf at that point(i started appreciating maiden about a year later). Around that time I was working at a White Castle fast food joint with a Tower Records right nextdoor. On saturdays i'd go to work, get paid and on my break i'd go and spend it all in Tower. Pretty much every classic priest album I bought there. Good time to get into priest too being they were just about ready to reunite, tour, and put out a kick ass new record. That Tower records has long since been shut down :-( God I miss that place. So i've been defending my faith since 2003! Edited at: Monday, December 21, 2009 10:27:27 PM |

Heya, welcome to the boards! A fellow antipodean, yay! LOL! [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by LadyRider from Saturday, September 12, 2009 1:23:22 AM) | | LadyRider wrote: | | New here, so hello to all you fellow Judas Priest fans.
Fell in love with Judas Priest when a band I hung around with in NZ did a cover version of Metal Gods. That was about twenty years ago, needless to say Metal Gods is still my all time favourite Priest song and always will be. From memory I started listening to them when Turbo was released but many of my friends had their older albums so I got to listen to a lot of their music and the love affair grew.
I admit to not being overly interested during The Ripper years since Rob Halford's vocals is a big part of the attraction and I couldn't get used to the idea of him not being there. Biased I know so please feel free to inform me if I am missing out. I may or may not do anything about it.
For me, JP are still the best metal band ever. Unfortunately missed seeing them when they were in Australia in 2008 due to major changes in life, so desperately hope they return. |
