Wow, talk about delusional. Sure sure and the "Board" is a personal pronoun too, LOL!!
Ok, kids...word of the day "euphemism." A euphemism is a substitution of an agreeable or less mean word or offensive expression in place of one that may offend or suggest something unpleasant to the listener, or in the case of doublespeak, to make it less troublesome for the speaker. Freeze claimed to have suffered "a momentary lapse, followed by a small misspeak." You and I know this by another phrase: "senior moment!"
Probably why he thinks he can still speak with Bob Denver too! BWWWAHAAAAAAHHAHHAHAAAAA!

Personally, I lean toward "a historical" as I do pronounce the "h" (as in hummingbird). The "h" is just begging for an "a" in font of it. [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Deep Freeze from Sunday, October 26, 2008 1:45:13 PM) | | Deep Freeze wrote: | | Well now Val, I am glad you asked!
Using "an" before historical has befuddled grammarians for centuries. The letter "h" is a glottal fricative, meaning it is pronounced by closing the glottis briefly. The "velar stop" is used in letters like "k". If you do not completely stop airflow when pronouncing, you get a velar fricative "ch", as used in the Scotish "loch". It is from this sound that we developed the "h" sound.
I mention all of this because it is a little known fact that, whether a word begins with a vowel or not does not firmly require the use of "an". In English grammar, the pronounciation is also part of the rule. Take, for example, the word "the". Depending on the article, we can pronounce it "thuh" or "thee".
It is important that speakers and writers understand the cadence or rhythm of a sentence is the key to proper speech. Edited at: Sunday, October 26, 2008 1:47:29 PM |

He used to come in to where I worked at the time with a floppy hat and sunglasses on. "BOARD" is a noun. If you reduced it to a pronoun it would, most likely, be it (depends on usage in the sentence). Proper nouns are distinguished from COMMON nouns in that they name something specific and, duh, begin with a capital letter.
Common noun: "The dog is cute." Proper noun: "Snoopy is cute."
Common noun: "Someone hit me with a board the other day." Proper noun: "I like to write on the JP.com Board!"
"Board," by any stretch of the imagination isn't a pronoun. If you can get a definite article "the" in front, you have a NOUN! The board. (Quoting Message by ronhartsell from Sunday, October 26, 2008 11:10:26 AM) Edited at: Sunday, October 26, 2008 11:32:28 AM |
