I'm a writer ( actually studying Journalim this year and next year) so I get excited when people speak about stuff they've written (lol)  Selling 200 copies is quite an achievement! I see your point though about wanting to keep it 100% in your control though, editors can be brutal!

Well.. it's 11 pm here now so I best be off now. Thanks for the chat, you're a very interesting person to talk to.

My book is self-published.  I did look into getting an ISBN number which is a national registry code to get wider distribution, but felt like that it would become too corporate.  This was something I wanted to have 100% say in how it got produced, distributed, etc.  To be honest, it's pretty much a local topic and I am not sure that it would do all that well outside of Central Oregon.  I have managed to sell around 200 copies which is about 199 more than I imagined I would ever sell, so I think I've done all right with it.  The book itself is only about 40 pages long but makes a nice evening read with a beer, glass of wine, whatever.
[joedraper] Sunday, June 22, 2008 3:50:56 PM
Wow! that is increadible! I find volcanoes really interesting too. I watch as many documentaries on them as I can, considering the closest volcano I could get to is in Namibia so national geographic will have to do for me. I think to have witnessed Mount St Helens go up... speechless. An experience that will stay with you forever I'll bet.

Have you approached a publisher about getting your book more widely distributed?

Most of the time the summers are pretty hot (it's desert, remember).  The Cascades shield us from most of the rain that comes in from the Pacific.  Last July 4th it got up to 103 here so yes, it does get pretty toasty.  Another benefit of living here is that when it does get too hot you can escape up in the mountains where it's cooler.  Also we don't have the humidity either so that makes it nice.

Listen, I have been sitting at this computer all day so I think I am going to get outside for a little bit.  I'll talk to you in a while, OK?
[spapad] Sunday, June 22, 2008 3:47:18 PM
Sounds fun, is it atleast warm in summer there? By warm I mean above 80.

Ooops, forgot. I am from a bodaciously small town called Bluefield, VA. There is also a Bluefield, WV which is now almost empty since "King Coal" does not work out so well for the area anymore. The business is still booming but with automated systems being in place there are less jobs. The railroad is a good job if you can stomach being called out at anytime of day or night. I used to date an engineer for years and he seemed like the crabbiest person in the world sometimes.

Yeah, if I had to claim two religions one would be Judas Priest heavy metal and the other would be climbing volcanoes.  The Cascades have about a dozen smoking guns that run in a north-south line from the Canadian border down through Washington State and Oregon and into Northern California. I have climbed about half of them.  Mount Saint Helens is the most famous of these, erupted in 1980.  I got to watch it go off which was one of the most incredible things I have ever seen.

My favorite peak to climb is South Sister (of a closely-knit group called the Three Sisters) which I climb at least once every summer.  Even wrote a short, handwritten book about it which got some local interest.

[joedraper] Sunday, June 22, 2008 3:36:49 PM

We do indeed have Lesotho surrounded! lol another very beautiful place should you ever get to see it.

However, sound like you live in paradise!  I hear what you're saying about the wrong kinds of people moving into the area, that can really put a bummer on things. Don't give up on owning your own house there one day, I believe everything is possible eventually. We've also got horrific housing prices too at the moment but our housing market is about to collapse and housing will become cheaper pretty soon from now. \

Are you really a mountain climber? That is so cool!! I'm more into hiking, we never had anything major to climb nearby but we've got some killer hiking trails around
.

Across the border in WV there is an entire county (pretty much) filled with crackheads. Anytime someone says they are from the "County" you know what county they mean. I have never even drove to that county and it is only about 40 minutes away. I just don't want to see it at all. I'm actually proud I have never been there.

[Tephra Rising] Sunday, June 22, 2008 3:25:21 PM
Central Oregon used to be that way.  Sadly, a little paranoia these days doesn't hurt (meaning all house and car doors stay locked).  We've got gangs and meth users slithering their way in here......sadly, US Highway 97 (the main north-south route through this area) has become a major traffic route for meth dealers.  Most of the felony arrests in this county are meth-related.  It's sickening.  Especially in such a beautiful place like this.
[spapad] Sunday, June 22, 2008 3:22:27 PM
I live in a place I feel clueless when a new person moves here. Why would they do it? I'm lucky to have a job in this area and I cant understand anyone moving here. I must admit though I have move away a few times and miss it when I'm not here, but wow it takes some getting used to once you get into the faster paced lifestlye of other places. It is a good place to let my daughter grow up. Around here you can still leave your door unlocked and the chances of something happening are as great as being struck by lightining.

Well if it makes you feel any better, I could always identify South Africa on the map as the country with the "hole" in it (that hole being Lesotho which I think is the only country in the world completely surrounded by another one).

Anyway........I live in Central Oregon which is a beautiful place, a combination of pine forests topped by high, snowcapped dormant volcanoes, wild rivers and high desert.  Big mecca for skiers, mountain bikers, hikers and mountain climbers (I'm in that last category).  Unfortunately all this natural beauty has its downside......it's currently America's most over-priced housing market (which is why I will probably never be able to afford my own home here) and all the wrong kinds of people are moving here (and they keep on coming).  But I consider it home, have moved away twice and regretted the move both times, so here I stay.
[joedraper] Sunday, June 22, 2008 3:07:25 PM
Pleased to meet you too Tephra! Yes, you stayed awake during that geography class (lol) we're in mid winter according to the solstice. We should start warming up but we actaully get the worst of it now. Sometimes it rains for up to a week at a time. Not cool when you've got kids who get cabin fever from not going outdoors.
[Tephra Rising] Sunday, June 22, 2008 3:01:54 PM
Well, nice to meet you Joe.  If I remember from not falling asleep too many times in geography class.......you're having winter right now, right?
[joedraper] Sunday, June 22, 2008 2:59:31 PM
I"m in Africa (south africa to be precise) I'm with you on the global warming thing.. winters this cold in Africa? lol.
In Cape Town (where I live) we have a mediterranean climate so we get all our rain in winter. We get snow but only very inland and on our mountain peaks. Even on the peaks is too close to me.. my house is surrounded by fecking mountains.. actually, it's a very beautiful place to live in.
[spapad] Sunday, June 22, 2008 2:52:14 PM

Yeah, I am wondering about my climbing plans this year.  I probably won't get to climb South Sister (local volcano which I always climb every year) until at least late July.  Then I am headed to Mt. Baker in the Washington Cascades to climb it in August.   I am ready for summer.

A lot of that was fluctuations in the exchange rate.  then from the late 90's to the mid 00's it was the other way, stuff here was comparitivly cheaper.  we exported a ton of cars, now, we import from the US.

but, damn we pay a lot of taxes for our socialized medicare.  I actualy think that today is the day i have paid all my taxes and get to keep the rest that I earn.

when does that happen in the states?

Don't give it a second thought.  I had a girlfriend back in Massachusetts who had family in P.E.I. ( Prince Edward Island, Metal Jesus' home )  and even as far back as the '80s they would come down to the states and buy like crazy.  I think the socialized medicine seriously devalues their economy.

Back in 1989 I did a 4-day marathon drive from Alaska through the Yukon Territory and northern BC to get to Washington State and back (2300 miles one-way).  I remember some of the gas prices in the more remote stops along the Alcan Highway were approaching highway robbery as they were the only place you could stop for gas for 100 or so miles, if not longer, also remember the confusion of converting liters to gallons and kilometers to miles......I suck at math, even when I'm cold sober.

Please excuse me a moment Vail for this next comment please.

I'm assuming we're talking about baldness? Also assuming Tephra Rising's a male. Let me tell you what my teacher said to me one day that may make you feel better. He was proud of his baldness, because he blamed it on his wife rubbing his head while he ate her out over all the years!

Yeah he was a cool person, and my favorite teacher. The same teacher who saw Led Zeppelin open for The Who back in the early 70's.

I had a nice shoulder-length 'do until about 2000 when my "inferior genetics" (thanks Mom) took over and it was either cut it short or apply to Colonial Williamsburg to play Ben Franklin.  I keep it short these days but just can't quite bring myself to go "chrome dome" quite yet.  (I really, really miss my hair.)

Is Vaillant suffering from lady trouble?  If so, I feel for ya bro, 2 failed marriages under my belt and at 40 it isn't exactly getting easier to find Miss Right.  Had a fantastic date with a great gal about 2 weeks ago, one of the best dates I think I've ever had, was really crazy about her but she let me know on no uncertain terms she didn't have those kind of feelings for me.  So I can relate.  I still search against all odds for Miss Right.  Love sucks sometimes......(oh well, we were 200 miles apart anyway.  Long-distance never seems to work for me.)

You're right. There's only one life... gotta live it up, right?

Ha !  Got the same "hair affliction" myself.  If nothing else, after having it halfway down my back, it's so much less trouble !

It's best to let little things like that go Vail. Life's short, and she won't always be there. One day you may find youself looking back, and when you do...be thankful that she even listened, or read something that means so much to you. That's one way to make it a positive instead of a negative for you. Maybe you won't get so mad next time as a result, and may even see the humor, or whatever it is from her point of view. Most important is that you do have moments with her like that, which will build up memories. Some people don't even have that.

No worries, DC.  Actually I was only poking mild fun, I thought Rob actually looked really cool with his mullet, although I think I liked him best with the British Steel "Living After Midnight" shoulder-length 'do (a style I emulated myself for a while in high school).  I suffer Rob's same affliction these days but haven't broken down and shaved it all off yet.......did I mention I'm not only the Hair Club President I'm also a member!!!???

Don't worry about Dokken.  I have found in the metal world you either love 'em or hate 'em.  I will say for the record that out of all the "hair bands" (Poison, Warrant, etc.), I found Dokken to be more concerned with the actual music they were playing and not how much lipstick and hairspray you had on.

The songs weren't the greatest when compared to Priest or Queensryche, but the guitar playing and that nasty violent sound George got just captured me.

You're gonna lose me talking about Dokken. Never got into them, and Rob's mullet was one of his best hairstyles IMO, but don't let my opinions discourage you from continuing. I respect anyones opinion, and you'll just have to excuse my ignorance about Dokken.

True it was Don's baby, but Don got his deal in Germany and had to actually get a talented band to keep it.  He really should have been more open to the band's input as Don's ideas got pretty dated quick.

Yeah, although I sometimes get too worked up and get mad if she makes fun of something important during a song (lyrically, most of the time). Its a little flaw of mine I still need to work on.

I don't know if you've had the chance to listen to the latest Dokken CD which was released last month.  It's called "Lightning Strikes Again" and it's fucking incredible.  Dokken back and firing on all cylinders.  I must have listened to it 100 times and it sounds just like they did 20 years ago.  Lynch isn't in the lineup anymore (too many pissing contests with Don, I suspect) but their current axe man can play just like Lynch and the riffs will bring him to mind.  I imagine that's an easier thing to do than replace Don, but then again this band was always Don's baby.  Oh those rock star egos.  What is one to do???

Vaillant already knows my story of Priest with Don Dokken opening that I caught on the Painkiller tour in Alaska in 1991.  I think Priest/Ryche 3 years ago is about the closest one to that.  Another spectacular concert.

My "live baptism of Priest" was during the Turbo tour in Tacoma, WA, 1986 (Rob with a mullet, hahaha)  The opener:  Dokken.
