Who's the better vocalist?

[Angelic Storm] Sunday, August 16, 2009 11:43:02 PM
I wouldnt agree with that...both are great singers, but Ralf's voice is closer to Halford's that Ripper's. I would say though, Ripper's voice is very suited to the "Jugulator" type material, whereas I doubt Ralf's voice would have suited the brutal stuff as well. I also think Ripper's voice is very American, which only really suits the later Priest material. Ralf has a very quirky voice, which is perfect in keeping with the Priest tradition. Dont get me wrong, Ripper is a great singer, and Priest could have a done a lot worse than choose him for the position. I also love the Jugulator and Demolition albums. I just think for the older, classic stuff, Ralf has a voice better suited for that, even though Ripper did a good job on that material as well. I think its also the fact that a lot of Ripper's really high notes contain a "rasp" to them, whereas Ralf's are very clean sounding, and more fluid. Its all just opinion of course, but if you havent already heard it, check out Gamma Ray's cover of Exciter with Ralf on vocals. That may make you change your mind!

After seeing priest tonight in Tampa  i am starting to think that maybe  they should get Ripper back, i had no problem with his vocals in fact i think he was very good...Rob tonight seemed very very slow  kept his head down all the time when he was singing as if he was reading from a teleprompter..he just didnt seem to have any energy at all..the rest of the band however were like they always have been...also it didnt help that the setlist was very dissappointing as well

Rob Halford is the legend! Only the greatest metal singer ever!

Of Course, ROB HALFORD THE METAL GOD! Owens is good but not in Judas Priest and Iced Earth.

Bruce is spot on, he is!  I made a comment in the "Popular" (LOL) thread about my opinion of Iron Maiden's music, their front man is an aspect of the band I enjoy reading about ; )  To the IM fans in our midst and I'm sure a couple of you are my friends, nothing on you all, just expressing my opinion ... don't turn the flames on too hot!!!  LOL

Interesting thing about stage presence. I am not sure how many of you saw the interview with Bruce Dickenson some time ago where he discussed that? He said (quite accurately) that when you are on stage you MUST be "larger than life". You need to over-exaggerate your movements and "blow yourself up" so that the people WAY in the back can see you too.

There is a lot to that statement. SO many people think the movement on stage is just "bouncing around" and whatnot but there is a method to the madness. If you look at some of the stage shots from the Priest shows you will even see markers taped on the stage floor. ...spots where the guys are supposed to stand. All designed to make the "look", set up picture shots..designate center stage, etc.

Stage presence makes all the difference - Ripper has a great voice,he's cagy, youthful, agressive, energetic; whereas, Scheepers is more in the Godlike image, confident, larger than life, etc.

At the end of the day ...  Anyone who tried would simply be a substitute ... NO ONE will ever, could EVER actually replace the MetalGod!  No matter how hard they try ... It's just not the same.

I disagree, Ripper's voice is way more powerful than Ralf Scheepers.  Scheepers has a good voice and can hit the highs but its kind of a squeaky sounding in my opinion. Nope, Ripper was the right man for the job.

Saw priest last night at Pacific Ampitheatre in Costa Mesa,CA and rob's pipes sound awesome. I like Owens also, but he can't sing anywhere near as good as Rob.
[CRISS II] Thursday, August 06, 2009 6:13:43 AM
In general, Rob was there from the early 70's! There through the 80's! And part of the 90's! But Judas Priest just won't be Judas Priest without Rob! Tim is great! Has a metal voice and character! Which, personally I think he ROCKS! But no one can fill the void of Halford! It's just that plain and simple! And it's FACT! We all get older, even our voices change! Mine has! Considerably! But Rob is out there busting his chops to satisfy his fans! And I say, "Rob, job well done"! ...."You rocked us over in Corpus Christi, Texas"! LONG LIVE THE PRIEST!
[Bev] Thursday, August 06, 2009 5:41:08 AM
Without a doubt Rob is the signature, quintessential, 'Priest voice!!!

Not that I knew much about anything at the time, but I have to wonder why Scheepers wasn't picked to fill the void while Rob was away ... he would have been my choice without question.  Must have had something to do with the direction Metal was taking at the time ... dunno.

Oh, I agree with you! Though his high range has definitely suffered with age, I'd actually say his lower register has far more character than it did back when he was in his prime. Ripper is a great metal vocalist, I wont deny him that. But there's a character and soul in Rob's voice which is notably abscent in Ripper's. Though the OP was asking if Rob or Ripper was better for Priest, and even if Rob couldn't be in Priest, I still think Ralf Scheepers would be a better choice for Priest than Ripper! But even he isn't quite as good as the metal god himself! He is getting better though, and maturity is suiting his voice well :)

As for Rob, well, his voice has suffered in some areas due to age, but in other's it is arguably better now than it ever was. He will always be the voice of Judas Priest.

Rob may not hit the clean high screams like he used to but I'll take his other vocals right now over any that Tim does..

Rob's  voice is unique and intense compared with the monster growling and tuned down voice of Tim's..

NOSTRADAMUS displays an incredibly soulful vocal and prolific writing style by ROB, a level that Tim just can't reach..   [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Angelic Storm from Wednesday, August 05, 2009 10:07:39 AM)

Halford in his heyday was a lot better than Ripper is now. As for now...Well, Ripper can hit the high notes a lot better than Rob can now! Though like someone else said, Halford has that little something called charisma. Which even though he cant sing as well as the Ripper today, that fact is why Id still take him in Priest today over Ripper. In any case, if I had to have another vocalist singing for Priest other than Rob, I'd rather have Ralf Scheepers than Ripper. But that would take him away from Primal Fear, which I would not want! lol

Rob, he is better in the whole picture, he could take the high notes when he was younger, but.......heyyy, he is not a teenager anymore......
Rob has a thing that I call "charisma".

Rob Halford "THE METAL GOD" !

I believe that Rob Halford is the best person (God) to be the singer of Judas Priest. Tim has a great voice but he was not the best singer to replace Rob!
[J.D. DIAMOND] Monday, July 20, 2009 3:56:30 AM
I agree. Tim is an excellent vocalist but Rob is much better.....I'd like to hear Tim when he is almost 60 years old........the point is Rob is better.

I'd bet that 97% of Judas Priest fans would say Rob is better and 3% would say Owens on a world wide poll.

All Guns Blazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Now this is "shear and razor sharp head whipping heavy metal"!!!  This is what it's all about and may be in the top 3 of heaviest tracks by Judas Priest ever done.

This is what we may be in for with the next LP.....JP can't stay away from this style long enough even if you paid them to........the next album will show critics that they still can pound it out with the young bands.
