Well I purchased Lionheart yesterday and have listened to it twice so far. Have to say it was pretty good and I'm sure it will get even better with a few more listens.

Oh yeah, make no mistake about it Saxon "fucked up thier career" in the 80's from "crap" like Ride Like The Wind. The band's first 5 studio LPs are cool but they actually have 6 straight albums that are not good from Crusader 1984 to Forever Free 1992 then they turned thier career around starting from 1995 Dogs Of War album till now.

But yeah they really "sucked" in the mid to late 80's man, they were a freakin "joke" but people still think they are like that but they are not. Biff even said he wishes that he never "sold out" to the American market with the MTV glam rock scene,he said he regrets it very much and wishes that those albums were better,he doesn't even like the 1986 "Rock The Nations" album at all,as hecan't stand to listen to it.    Saxon's Biff Byford always says that Saxon plays a mix between traditional british heavy metal that fits into the category with Judas Priest and Iron Maiden but they also have half thier albums that is traditional "rock" as well. Slow Lane Blues is a bluesey track off the new album and its a classic.

Thanks to Tina from Walsall England for getting me into Saxon in 2005,Tina you rock!

Sweet, thanks for the advice. I actually played Man and Machine on my show a couple of weeks ago. Cool track. A lot of their stuff is good. I have changed my tune about Saxon a bit since I realised they weren't all about that Ride Like The Wind shit.

Thats cool Jimmy. With a "couple" meaning "2" then if I had to recommend an album to check out it would be 2004's "Lionheart".  The next album I would check out is 2007's "The Inner Sanctum". Those are Saxon's best 2 albums but only in my opinion, there are some songs that are better than others as like all albums but on those 2 albums I actually like every song on both albums, that is very unusual for me.

Usually there are at least 2 songs out of 10 that I end up not liking, but like every track on both LPs. You may find a couple of tracks on these LPs that you don't like but hopefully you'll like the majority of both albums, you should still get 8 songs off each album that are quality and 8 songs makes up an album's worth at least.

BATALLIONS OF STEEL - first track off the current album Into The Labyrinth(2009)one of Saxon's top 10 best tracks ever written. Judas Priest will always be the Godfathers of British Heavy Metal but with thier retirement Saxon takes the torch and continues heavy metal's traditional paths.

[J.D. DIAMOND] Monday, December 27, 2010 4:38:37 PM
Who would of thought back in the 80's that it would be Saxon that ended up ontop of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden in writting "quality" and "traditional" british heavy metal albums and with quality consistancy?  I always thought that in the end Priest and Maiden would shape up in time to release thier best albums late in thier career but it has been anything but that.

Saxon is the band out of the 3 that ended up writting thier best material at this stage in thier career and with them giving thier fans a 19th studio album in March 2011 they haven't yet said anything about retireing but if they do at least we will get this new studio LP,that is fucking awsome!

I'll bet that Saxon will record thier 20th studio album in 2013,they are extremely motivated when it comes to writting albums. If this new studio album turns out excellent in quality ect...then they will have 8 studio albums in a row that are the band's best material,we'll wait and see.

The only reason there is a 3 year gap between 2001 and 2004 is because the label wanted Saxon to record "Heavy Metal Thunder" which is a re-recorded CD of  tracks from the 80's and there is a 3 year gap between 2004 and 2007 because Biff's house burnt down in France, otherwise there would be an album every 2 years and actually there would be yet even another studio album out.

Dogs Of War ---------------1995
Unleash The Beast-------1997
Metalhead-------------------1999
Killing Ground--------------2001
Lionheart--------------------2004
The Inner Sanctum-------2007
Into The Labyrinth---------2009
New Album in March -----2011

These are Saxon's 7 best albums in my opinion and we'll wait and see if the new album is good quality song writting....

Thoughts? Of course.  Its pretty quite simple Guido, lets face it...Saxon's quality of music in the 1980's was nowhere near the "kick ass factor" that Judas Priest had,and Iron Maiden "had"....with albums like  Unleashed In The East,British Steel,Screaming For Vengeance and Defenders Of The Faith(1979 - 1984) and Iron Maiden 1980 debut ,Killers,The Number Of The Beast,Piece Of Mind and Powerslave......and Motorhead's Bomber,Ace Of Spades,Iron Fist albums....

These albums in my opinion and many others were and are better than Saxon's first 5 studio albums from thier debut album "Saxon" in 1979,Wheels Of Steel 1980,Strong Arm Of The Law,Denim & Leather and Power & The Glory(1983.)

Sure these Saxon albums are cool yes,but they are not as "good" as the other band's albums, they are just not and then you had Saxon's image,it spanked of "cheese" and they looked silly. They just couldn't top Priest,Maiden and Motorhead. That is "why" Guido but the dagger for Saxon was in 1984 with thier 6th studio album "Crusader" ...sure the song 'Crusader" is total classic Saxon and is one hell of a kick ass song and I mean that, but the rest of the entire album "sucked balls" and they went "glam" with the rest of the album's sound and the band's image,it just sucked.

Then they did Innosence Is No Excuse in 1985 and that album full blown "sucked",it is utterly terrible. Then in 1986 they did the shitty "Rock The Nations" album with the same glam crap, then again in 1988 with "Destiny".  So from 1984 to 1989 they killed themselves out of the scene they were really never able to uphold popularity in,in the first place and rightfully so with those shitty albums.

Even if they didn't go "glam" and kept putting out albums like Wheels Of Steel with old guitarist Grahm Oliver they still wouldn't of been in the same quality elite group of Judas Priest,Iron Maiden and Motorhead obviously.

Although in 1990 and 1992 with Solid Ball Of Rock and Forever Free albums they were only half good and still didn't harness a "kick ass factor". It wasn't untill 1995 that Saxon started "kicking some ass" and they released Dogs Of War with 10 tracks,7 of them kick ass,3 were glammy left-overs but they were headed in the right direction. Then in 1997 the Unleash The Beast album totally kicked ass man, again with Metalhead album in 99' then Killing Ground,Lionheart,The Inner Sanctum and Into The Labyrinth(2009)....

I belive if Saxon would of been putting these albums out in the early 80's with the band's now-a-days image of black cloths and leather jackets  ect....I think they would of "took off" a little bit more Guido...no not as much and not as popular as Judas Priest,Maiden or Motorhead but yeah I really think that they would of taken flight a little more with the metal fans of the 1980's back then.

Imagine if Lionheart was released in 1983 with the band's current image, next to albums like Piece of Mind,Sceaming For Vengeance,Holy Diver,Iron Fist...ect...it would of made a much bigger impression with metal fans....again they still wouldn't be as "popular" as Priest,Maiden or Motorhead but it would of been much more exposure for them back then.  I was being a smart ass when I said Priest should take lessons from Saxon, but I still belive that because of how Saxon puts out an album every 2 years man!! lol!

Not to mention, yes Judas Priest is better than Saxon obviously and yes they are my favorite band but Saxon has been so,so much more "consistant" with "quality" releases of studio albums these last 15 years, they actually wipe up the floor with Judas Priest and Iron Maiden with "quality" studio albums these last 15 years except for Angel Of Retibution which is just as good as Saxon's last 7 studio albums, better in some cases.

Its a shame that Saxon are really not heard of these days, they deserve so much more yet they NEVER complain about any of this, they just love what they are doing and keep British Heavy Metal alive with thier brand of hard rock and heavy metal. Anybody who thinks they are not worthy,I'd challenge them to watch and listen to the Wacken concert 2001 in Germany  that they headlined with about 30 or 40 thousand heavy metal fans ,thats in the Saxon Chronicles DVD,check it out Guido.

Rob has got to rest at some time too, or should. So six months beyond the end of the Halford tour they might get in the studio.  If you think about it, most bands when they reach "maturity" don't put out as many albums as they used to, IF they do at all!  We all should be happy that JP is still around and delivering the goods. I do hope for a more traditional album next time and I'm sure they will give us a beauty. For the Faithful!

I don't know why HB, but the use of the word "fail" like that makes me laugh. Are you trying to talk like the trendy kids of today, HB?

J.D., I think Judas Priest did take some lessons from Saxon in regards to releasing albums every two years or so, at least in the 80s... and then they released the disaster (for some, and probably for them) that was Turbo, which took two years to make after the release of DOTF. But then again, they got back with Painkiller, which also took two years to make after the release of RID. One size does not fit all, IMO, especially if it becomes incompatible with the work ethic of a band. How is JP's work ethic now? Well...you be the judge. They're either writing new material right now, or still relaxing, or waiting for Rob to come back from his tour with his solo band so that they can begin writing, or...something else.   [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Head banger from Thursday, October 28, 2010 5:45:48 PM)

At the risk of upsetting your Beiber worship (heh), I would also prefer that they not take lessons from him either. While I don't have much of a comment on the Ripper-era albums, some of us really appreciate Nostra and hardly consider it a "useless" recording. Throw the Halford / solo albums in there and the ratio years = production goes even higher.

they could take lessons from Justine Beiber if it meant we would get a new album.  4 in 2 decades, with one of these completly useless, 2 with a "backup" singer.... FAIL!!!

I'd actually argue AGAINST Priest "taking lessons from Saxon." While I personally like Saxon and even admire the speed in which they produce new material, it cannot be denied that they do not hold a candle to the mighty Priest in terms of overall popularity worldwide. That goes for now and before. Sure, the same argument could and has been made with Priest vs. Maiden but Saxon isn't even in the running. Hell, Motorhead even swamps them. Why?

I've often asked myself the same question about Priest. Sadly, I too am on the "blame marketing" bandwagon. Over the years, I do think that the "label" has really made some really poor judgement calls in the marketing of Priest. What about Saxon? While I, along with many, see Priest shirts in airports and cities around the globe (albeit sporadically) , I rarely if EVER see a Saxon shirt. Mention them and very few even recognize the name. That even goes for classic metal fans.

While this particular aspect has always pissed me off about the handling decisions regarding Priest, it is more a "curious puzzling" about Saxon as to why they never really "took off." Thoughts?   [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by J.D. DIAMOND from Thursday, October 28, 2010 4:37:29 PM)

Great band. They was my second heavy metal concert in 1982 (the first was Motorhead in 1981), It was in Rome and we were 12.000 fans. They are, in my opinion really one of the best band of ever. Some very good albums, some less as for all the bands, but they was together with Priest and Maiden the gotha of NWOBHM and still they are.

lol! Thanks pedro68,these are mearly just my opinions so I know that there is no right answer when we talk about songs, there can be 99% of a group of people who hate a song but since there is one person that likes that song, saying that song sucks is not true. I wish it wasn't like this lol!!  Saxon are working on an album now as I've heard so it will be out in 2011 sometime for sure.

I sure think that the 2nd half of Saxons Career is much better than the first half by far but there is always old school fans that will say that Wheels Of Steel(1980),Strong Arm Of The Law(1981) and Denim & Leather(1981 the same year) are thier best  3 albums, and again theres no right or wrong answer to this but I will always say no way,Lionheart(2005) is thier best album then The Inner Sanctum(2007)and Metalhead (1999)are thier 3 best for me.

[J.D. DIAMOND] Monday, September 13, 2010 1:13:12 PM
Yeah, they killed themselves by thier 6th studio album is what happened. The band had an ok sound and song writting from albums 1979 'Saxon" till 1983 "Power & The Glory" but thier image spanked of poor design it was terrible, however they were and still are both a heavy metal and a rock band,so beings they had "rock" mixed with traditional heavy metal thier image didn't need to be 100% heavy metal but what they were wearing at that time spanked of ugly and it was "cheesey".

But the music on the first 5 albums were good, then they put out 1984's "Crusader" album, the song "Crusader" is a classic british heavy metal song and its a jewel but the album is god awful, the Crusader song is the only worthy track on the album, and along with it came the "hair glam" image and then they did 3 more albums like this, 1985 "Innocense Is No Excuse",then 1986 "Rock The Nations" then 1988 "Destiny",so from 1984 to 1989 they were a washed up pretty boy glam band that was very "weak.

Biff said they were burned out and were cashing in on the American market at that time wich now he fully regrets doing.   I remember Saxon through this back then and they sucked, sure thier first 5 studio albums were cool but the next 4 albums just killed them, not that they were as popular as Priest,Maiden or Motorhead in the first place cause they weren't,but it really killed the band. It wasn't till 1990 "Solid Ball Of Rock" and 1992 "Forever Free" albums that kick started Saxon's career again but those 2 albums only were half good, both of them had half an albums worth of  lame hair band era songs on them, but it was a start. Then they put out Dogs Of War 1995 and that album has 8 out of 10 songs that are great british heavy metal/rock.

I wasn't actually around at the time so I can't be sure of this, but in the late 80s when contemporaries like Maiden and Def Lep were consolidating their fanbases, Saxon released a couple of truly terrible albums, and kind of dropped off the radar in the UK. They were actually pretty popular before that. They did tour the States because I've read an old review of them- I think it was '83, L.A, Metallica were the support.. neither band got reviewed well however. I don't know how the American public received them- J.D. probably knows.

One place they do seem to be very popular is Germany- They quite often headline festivals there.

I cant remember Saxon touring the U.S in the 80's,and if they did - did they suit the U.S market
On a positive note - its just good to know their still with us and playing better than ever, cheers

I'm not "Painkiller" pedro68 (lol).   And yes,on the 1988 Destiny album I forgot, they covered a Christopher Cross track "Ride Like The Wind" and its utterly terrible and "embarrassing". Even Biff regrets doing it,and the Destiny album too haha!!

Thanks Painkiller I didnt know they coverd that song thats interesting.I seem to recall maybe they did a song called Ride like the wind by Christopher Cross.
Not sure if it made its way on to a album, but i know they played it live and it rocked, cheers.

LOL jimmy!!!  Yeah the song isn't anything to write home about to begin with ya know, but yeah Saxon did a cover song of it "Set Me Free" in 1984 from the crappy "Crusader" album,so I burned it onto a disc and got rid of the CD because that was the only other worthy track on the album besides the song "Crusader" and then years later when I met my girlfriend she saw that Saxon covered it,so she busts out a copy of the same track on Vince Neil's solo album and it totally killed it for me,not that I played that song very much anyway but it wasn't bad and then boom, she laughed her ass off and I've not listened to it since haha!! Fuckin squeaky Vince jimmy I'll tell ya lol!
