Hey, now. Never once did I say that running wasn't boring. You know that I run just because I have nothing better to do!
Still, bad decision to make a SONG about a boring story made into a boring movie about such a monotonous activity! [Show/Hide Quoted Message](Quoting Message by Head banger from Tuesday, April 05, 2011 7:30:56 PM)

I distinctly remember how sad I was when it came out. While I still think "Caught Somewhere in Time", "Wasted Years" and even "Deja-Vu" are absolute GEMS and, for that reason alone (plus the art...WAY cool to try and find all the hidden messages) the album is priceless, I also temper that comment with how lame and - even worse - PREDICTABLE the rest of the songs were IMO. Worst? The absolutely lame, long and drawn-out "Lonliness of the Long Distance Runner!!" I was bopping around Chicago when this album came out. The three songs I mentioned above really caught my attention but the rest were pretty blah. "Try again," I think, so went for a nice long walk with the cassette in my ears. GAWD, I almost whipped that tape into Lake Michigan just because of that one song! LOL! While I absolutely loved Maiden before it, I really felt like a "Stranger in a Strange Land" (booooring) and far from "Alexander the Great" (pffff...so memorable, I can't even remember the basic chorus).
Funny how I can remember that rainy day back in 1986 when I almost chucked that tape as far as I could even thinking "running must be damn boring!" LOL!
Still think the album is worth it for the three songs I mentioned above, though. Oh yeah, did I mention the great artwork? HAAAAA!

Thats why Saxon is up 15 to 4 here. They are voting for the current Saxon, not the sillyish Saxon from the 80's. Its mother fucking "SAD" that a band like Maiden can sell out arenas that Saxon can't yet when asked about comparing albums in quality the same Maiden fans that bought the tickets vote for Saxon? Its sad man.
Iron Maiden are living off thier first 5 studio albums( JUST LIKE SHITALLICA) while Saxon are living off thier current albums which are better than Iron Maiden's last 10 studio albums......"10" albums man....... not 1,2,3,4,5.......10!!!!!
All these people who voted for Saxon are voting for them because of Saxon's last 8 studio LPs dating back 16 years to Dogs Of War. So this shows the last 16 years and counting Saxon totally blows Iron Maiden out of the water.
Now if the thread were Saxon and Iron Maiden showdown just from the 1980's alone I would vote for Iron Maiden hands down, all Iron Maiden albums from the 1980's blows all Saxon albums from the 1980's away. But thats what is sad, this again shows how much better Saxon is now-a-days from a percentage of people's votes.
These people that go to Maiden's concerts that sell out 60,000 thousand fans just to see Maiden on a whopping percentage are not buying the tickets to hear El Dorado or any Maiden album after Seventh Son,they are buying the tickets to hear songs from 1980 debut "Iron maiden" ,Killers,The Number Of The Beast,Piece Of Mind,Powerslave,Somewhere In Time (yuk but fans like it better than thier nu stuff) and Seventh Son albums.
People are tired of getting watered down material from Iron Maiden, even Bruce's last 3 solo albums "Accident Of Birth,The Chemical Wedding and Tyranny Of Souls" blows all modern day Maiden albums out of the water, but its Bruce not Steve Harris.
And these people who voted here are not being "biased they are giving credit to Saxon for out-writting Iron Maiden in song quality. They are not just voting for Saxon to piss you off, they are sick of Steve Harris and thats what it boils down to. Steve Harris has ruined Iron Maiden and has since 1990.
The Number Of The Beast,Killers and Piece Of mind....these 3 albums are classics and even I will admit that even the best Saxon album Lionheart to me can't top it,thats how cool this band used to be. I was an Iron Maiden fan before you were born as I started liking them in 1982 when I bought The number Of The Beast and have been nothing but disappointed from 1990 till now...thats 21 years.
I do think the debut album "Iron Maiden" and "Powerslave" are excellent but they to me are just barely not as good as Lionheart and The Inner Sanctum, but its close.
However I still do like A Matter Of life And Death. Maybe you should of titled the thread "1980's Iron Maiden or 1980's Saxon"...instead,then Maiden woiuld be up 20 to 0!

Amazing.... Brian_Evans created this thread 4 months ago and Saxon is up "15 votes to Maiden's measly 4 votes". Saxon clearly has stomped Iron Maiden into the dust as everybody has posted to prove this. Up the Saxon fans!!
Hammer of the Gods is such a kick ass, straight forward, classic heavy metal style song! I really like it. El Dorado to me is very 'meh' - typical of Maiden these days, convoluted, self indulgent and actually not very interesting.
Iron Maiden's El Dorado vs. Saxon's Hammer Of The Gods....post which track you like better since its a showdown(lol!) I say Saxon's Hammer Of The Gods is light years better in quality than El Dorado.

You should check out Saxon's last 7 studio albums and compare them with the last 7 studio albums of Iron Maidens. If you still prefer Maiden's LPs I would be stunned and shocked to the fullest.
Rest assured I will be checking out more of those later Saxon albums when things quieten down a bit around here, really liked Lionheart by the way.

Very good jimmy .....bravo. I agree with Maiden's back catalogue except for your Seventh Son comparison, that album is nowhere near Saxon's last 7 studio albums neither is Somewhere In Time but I'll say that the first 5 Maiden albums are better than Saxon yes. This thread should of been "modern day" era for both bands. That being said Saxon is still up 13 to 4 and that is amazing. Most people including myself are giving Saxon credit for the last 15 years over Maiden, people are sick and tired of "The Final Frontier" kind of sounds, sure I still like AMOLAD minus 2 tracks but I see why people don't like modern day Maiden, thier sound isn't strong anymore while Saxon's sound is very strong and heavy.
Again,in my opinion the last 7 studio albums Dogs Of War,Unleash The Beast,Metalhead,Killing Ground,Lionheart,The Inner Sanctum and Into The Labyrinth totally 100% destroys and obliviates Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son,to me its like trying to compare Turbo(which would be S.I.T. and S.S.O.A.S.S) to Painkiller(which would be Saxon's last 7 albums).
jimmyjames wrote:
I say Maiden. Reason being, the first seven Maiden albums are all brilliant, some of the best metal albums ever made. Even though Saxon are producing quality metal albums these days and Maiden are going more progressive, Saxon have yet to produce an album that comes even close to any of the first seven Maiden albums. In saying that though I still need to hear more of their stuff but I'd be very surprised if they had an album as good as Killers or Number Of The Beast or Powerslave or Seventh Son anywhere in their back catalogue.

In saying that though I still need to hear more of their stuff but I'd be very surprised if they had an album as good as Killers or Number Of The Beast or Powerslave or Seventh Son anywhere in their back catalogue.

Dude I couldn't agree more with you! This is why in this thread's first 2 months of existance that fanboy Maiden asskisser Brian_Evans created Saxon are up 11 to 3!!! Now by the end of this year he will probly create a bunch of fake accounts just to vote for Maiden, but this is why Saxon is up 11 to 3 is because Saxon is far better than Maiden nowadays, people just keep buying Maiden records to compleate the collection ect...

SAXON because Maiden is way overrated!!! Maiden was great in the '80s and I was a big fan, but they haven't done anything that I really like since then. Saxon on the other hand is still going strong! I also heard a rumor that Saxon may be opening for Priest in Europe this summer! I hope that if they do, they bring them over to the States to open for them here cause that would KICK ASS!

Is Heavy Metal even original anymore?
Classic metal bands can't put out an original album anymore because when people demand Heavy Metal they need to stick to the same formulas that they have used a dozen times.
Nostradamus was original but wasn't a Heavy Metal album lol
I for one demand riffs like this, does exactly what it says on the tin. [Show/Hide Quoted Message](Quoting Message by Brian_Evans from Friday, January 28, 2011 8:13:43 AM)

saxon without any doubt, i like maiden but it gets boring after a while, not like saxon. saxon is more what i think is real Heavy Metal.
[sentinel84] Sunday, January 09, 2011 8:16:52 PM
Saxon along with raven are some of the most consistent bands in metal. Every album kicks ass they never went soft or really changed at all. Maiden on the other hand has really released nothing but crap since 1988 (with the exception of brave new world which I did like).
[Anders Haneskog] Wednesday, January 05, 2011 3:21:31 PM
I have not heard latest album of Saxon, must checked it out!
Saxon play by the books - straight forward metal. You can always depend on Saxons to deliver your saturday Metal-steak!
Maiden has gone softer by the years - too bad...they were so good in the 80-ties!
Last album was terrible for being maiden - their lowest point as yet!
And all the papers wrote that it was soo good - it is so blindfolded...
Maiden lives today on what they did in the 80-ties. They have an incredible reputation. Anything they do strikes gold in the eyes of the beholders...
- I hope they can do better on next album - perhaps look back to the 80-ties for inspiartions (in a way) but forward also...???
Maiden is always Maiden of course - just remember "Number of the Beast".
I would not switch that album for their whole 2000-2010-bunch of catalogue put together.
Except...a little on "A Brave New World"...perhaps. It had its moments.
But Maiden still do good shows - I guess...haven´t been on one for many years - but seen on tv.
Because of the 80-ties - and Eddie - they are still one of my favs bands.
And their sleeves are just the best!

You have to look at the complete discography where Priest and Maidem easily tower above Saxon, not just the last few cd's. Although I have to admit Priest hasn't done a lot since Painkiller. A huge 12 year gap without Rob Halford didn't help so you really can't blame anyone there but Rob Halford. So I would say Halford had a lot to do with them going south since Painkiller but they are still the kings of british metal in my opinion.

Judas Priest represents "Nostradamus" from here on out as that is the last album K.K. wanted fans to remember Judas Priest by ,its sad but K.K. wants it this way so if he wants it this way then he can't have his cake and eat it too. Judas Priest "used" to represent british heavy metal but obviously they don't want that title anymore.
And with Maiden so progressed its only Saxon that is left as any other band can't hold a flame to Saxon these days. If The Final Frontier and Nostradamus are people's idea of true british heavy metal then maybe its a good thing that Judas Priest in hanging up the leathers and its a good thing that Steve Harris said that The Final Frontier is Maiden's last album as he only wanted 15 studio albums. Those 2 albums are a watered down poor representation of "true" british Heavy metal. You can't say that about any of the last 7 studio albums by Saxon,no way it just ain't valid and any true metal fan will be able to "see straight through this".
