Ahhhhh so it's the first time they've topped their group since 1930. Thanks Guids! [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by guidogodoy from Wednesday, June 23, 2010 10:07:09 PM) | | guidogodoy wrote: | | Sorry...been rebuilding yet another computer. What fun.
To answer the question, Budred, you heard right. While Becks is right about the Semi's, the reference to the 1930s is also correct. It is the first time since the 1930s that the USA WON ITS WC GROUP! You aren't going deaf or crazy, Bud.
Not to take anything away from them but 1930 was the first official FIFA WC and only a dozen or so countries participated. Still, it was an upset then as well. | | Budred wrote: | | GUIDO????? |

Best of luck to the USA when they face Ghana this Saturday. Just might go to the local bar after work to see that match. |

Here...just to confirm what I already knew:
"It is the first time since 1930 that the U.S. won its World Cup group. On Saturday, the U.S. will play the second qualifier from Group D, Ghana, in the Round of 16."

and if its that close the defender should have a shot at a decent defence. the refs do a damn hard job quite well. comentators need something to bitch about. its like player blaming the weather or the pitch, its the same for both teams. players bitching about the ref should get a yelow card first word. [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by _strat_ from Wednesday, June 23, 2010 4:39:27 PM) | | _strat_ wrote: | | Yeah, that is true, there are close calls, and sometimes its really down to centimeters... But then again, if you go splitting hairs like that, youre totaly missing the point of the offside rule, which is to prevent a team ganging up in the opponents penalty area, and force them into being a bit more inventive.
IDK... I still think that refs are fine. Not always - most of the times. And players complaining about decisions doesnt change them either. | | Head banger wrote: | | its still a bitch to get in the right spot and see at the right time. lots of bloody close calls on offside. having worked as a linesman (before it was called referees assistant) I know that you will for sure miss things. | | _strat_ wrote: | | Refs never call games of their own countries.
There are two assistant refs on the sides, that see very well any offsides, and they usualy inform the main ref about them. | | ron h wrote: | | I tend to like the human element with regards to officiating, no matter the sport. I think we've all been on both sides of a bad call and it's weird because we only complain when it goes against us, yet cheer when we get lucky.
ALL of these off-sides calls are pure judgement calls as the action is fast and they have to make calls in a split-second. We fans watching on the TV really only know after seeing the slow-motion replay. 'Off-sides' seems to be the big difference maker this year, for a number of teams and not just the U.S. Although that sucks, there's been triple as many shots on goal going off the bar instead of in the net, I'm more concerned about that!!
I tend to think the sport needs better traing, maybe more ref's on the field or ref's not calling games of their own home countries (maybe that's a rule that's already in place, I don't know). What I do know is that if the U.S. made the goals they should have throughout the tournament, today would not have been so critical a match. |

I didn't see the disallowed goal and haven't heard anything about it - must find highlights video! Wonder if the Fifa.com video will show it - those highlights videos are way too short. It does happen in the Olympics and would not supprise me to happen here. Not saying today's call was rubbish, but I do think it's time they backed up their calls with video. All sports do it. Seems way too old school not to. I'm sure HB will come in and tell me what for. I'm a namby pamby lol! HA!! But I was also pissed off tonight about the amount of time commercials now take up in commercial breaks here. Used to be two minutes two seconds, which is all the average human can stand. I timed a break at 3:30 on one show tonight and that is just pissing me off. Make it stop!!! LOL | | Becks wrote: | | LOL fair enough. Wonder what it was that hasn't been done since 1930. 1930 and how they needed a (near)miracle to pull it off and then watching them do it. Sorry, but that was
