Yeah, that is true, there are close calls, and sometimes its really down to centimeters... But then again, if you go splitting hairs like that, youre totaly missing the point of the offside rule, which is to prevent a team ganging up in the opponents penalty area, and force them into being a bit more inventive.

IDK... I still think that refs are fine. Not always - most of the times. And players complaining about decisions doesnt change them either.

its still a bitch to get in the right spot and see at the right time.  lots of bloody close calls on offside.  having worked as a linesman (before it was called referees assistant) I know that you will for sure miss things.

Hmmm not a bad idea. I like the idea of a television match official, like a 4th umpire. If there's a call the ref is unsure of, go up there, and with football the good thing is on video review it's often very obvious what has happened, so a decision can be made quicker than people think.

I think what they do in other sports would be nice. Two challenges. If they win, it doesn't count against them, if it stands, they lose one of the two.

Wouldn't stop the flow of the game rather be used sparingly.

Very true Freeze.  There's the rare occasion a ref or ump or judge admits their err.  The example you gave was excellent.  I think the majority of us are a forgiving bunch, just do the right thing even if admitting so won't change the outcome...one does have to find a way to sleep at night you'd think?!?!  lol  You're also dead-on about how the have an air of arrogance about them.  At the same time, these players are the 'stars' of their respect hometown teams, the 'best of the best' if you will, most (if not all) of these players have ego's to match!!  It takes a lot to stand up to these characters...not defending them, just an observation.  I can see why they get physically attacked at times lol worse yet, I remember hearing about a goalie who was attacked and killed after he gave up a goal!!  I bet they run straight home after each match!!  lol

Oh, shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.......................... This is NOT a good day.

Screwed by the English TWICE today. First when theyve beaten our boys, now their penal colony screwed our southern brothers... Someone has to consider bombing them right now... I hope uncle Putin is reading this.

There has been some craptacular umpiring at this world cup, due to the human error element of things. It's not so much arrogance, but the fact that what the ref says goes cos there is no third umpire of any kind. In saying that, I do believe FIfa need to get with the times and start using video refs for contentious or 50/50 calls. That's just Fifa being very old school though.   [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Deep Freeze from Wednesday, June 23, 2010 1:19:41 PM)

Strat and I agreeing..??!?!?  HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! Please!!! HAHAHAHAHHA!! I really doubt the US team had a planned target (the official) if they were to lose. Seems to me that they would be wasting their time actually playing this game if that were the case. I mean, just mail it in and blame others....although THAT might be more entertaining...HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!        ANYHOOO-

You know you do make sense, Ron. I have already said I like the human element as well. I guess the only thing these soccer guys can (or SHOULD) do is OWN UP to it when they blow a call. Case in point;

Recently here in the US, a baseball umpire cost a pitcher a place in history with a very bad call. Replays clearly showed he had blown the call. The next day, not only did he take ownership and apologize, there was a VERY emotional meeting prior to the next game between him and the young man that had lost due to his call. The umpire in question was actually tearful and SO very remorseful. It took a real man to admit what he did, especially given that the player lost a spot in the history books!

Seems to me that these soccer fellows think themselves "above" question. They are arrogant and, frankly, they seem to be terribly inadequate given that this is a "world" event! One would think that the FIFA people would try to get more qualified officials. Just my observation. As I readily admit, I have NO idea what is going on and I am relying solely on the comments of the so-called "professionals" on my TV. That said, they are STILL going on about the poor officiating.

Woopsy, the ball is proving hard for keepers to handle - wee spill by the Aussie goalie and Serbia claw back to 2-1.
