Got my answer already, Old Man! HAAAAAAA!

(wait...I take that back. The Board is caps, no doubt. However, if you think it is a "geographical place"...you are going nutters! LOL!!! Tell you what, I'll buy you an all-expense paid ticket to The Board and treat you to the best lobster dinner you ever had...see you there!) No. He was right in the caps (look at my example) just wrong in his description. Board would be a proper noun in this use as you are referring to a specific place. Cap. "B."

BWWAAAAAAHAHAHHAHHAA!!!! Death to you, guido!!! Death!!
Ron, NO!! The Board is considered a geographical place in this instance so you would say, "Welcome to the Board", just as one might say, "Welcome to Brazil.."   RIGHT, GUIDO??!?!??!?!?!??!
[ron h] Sunday, October 26, 2008 11:42:41 AM
'Welcome to The board' would be the proper way to post?

Sure. I could say Guido Guido Guido. Instead, I use the subject PRONOUN "I." I could say "I give the bike to Mary." Likewise, I could reduce it to "I give it to her." It being the direct object pronoun, her being the indirect object PRONOUN. Pronouns take the place of nouns. Usually to avoid unnecessary repetition of nouns. Simple as that...

"BOARD" is a noun. If you reduced it to a pronoun it would, most likely, be it (depends on usage in the sentence). Proper nouns are distinguished from COMMON nouns in that they name something specific and, duh, begin with a capital letter.

Common noun: "The dog is cute." Proper noun: "Snoopy is cute."
Common noun: "Someone hit me with a board the other day."  Proper noun: "I like to write on the JP.com Board!"

"Board," by any stretch of the imagination isn't a pronoun. If you can get a definite article "the" in front, you have a NOUN! The board.   [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by ronhartsell from Sunday, October 26, 2008 11:10:26 AM)

Pronouns take the place of nouns. Thus, the name. You both are describing a "proper noun!"

Morning Guido...I know where DF is coming from...once a common noun is used to relate, identify or describe something specific, it then becomes a pronoun...otherwise I could be referring to a piece of wood as opposed to the Priest Board...just my translation of it

HA!!!!!!!!!! Well done, my friend!!!!! I am glad you care! Always remember, language is the principal vehicle of thought.  So numerous and important are the ends to which it is subservient, that it is difficult to imagine in what manner the affairs of human society could be conducted without it!!!!!

Thank you, I can now welcome folks properly...I do want you to know that I try to remember to spell check my posts in the event you're lurking about...I may not use the correct words in their proper places, but they will be spelled correctly!!!  (and I do feel quite proud when the window pops open and reads: No spelling errors were identified )

The word board is a noun , however, when used to reference a certain place as in this context, one would consider it a personal pronoun and it would be capitalized, designating the distinction from a common noun.

I always wondered if the 'b' in board should be capitalized or not.  My thinking was if I used the word by itself, it shouldn't be.  But if using it in reference to a specific place (ie Priest Board or welcome to the Board) it should be capitalized.
I've done both, so I figure I'm batting .500 What is the rule for this?

Oh my dear, dear friend. You will find as you get to know me better that grammar is not just speaking to me! It is a passion! The English language is something I cherish! I used to be FAR worse when it came to correcting people here on this Board but I have mellowed. Besides, it is a lost cause around this place! HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm just glad you haven't beaten me down about how I can sometimes abuse grammar and sentence structuring  English, and all that goes with it, has never been my strong suit  of the three R's, aRithmatic was more my thing, but even those lessons seem so long ago

Well, from what I recall that is its origin. Something to do with heart valves being called cochlea coris or something like that. They say that they resemble the shellfish, ergo you get "cockles of my heart". Now, that is our lesson for the day. If anyone is interested in a grammar or English lesson, I would be happy to oblige otherwise, on to other things! Ron, will you read the minutes from our last meeting please? Actually Ron, the cockles of my heart is an old expression that you may remember. I believe it is derived from the latin for one's heart chambers which , I believe, resemble the shellfish Necro mentioned.
