Hmm. Good point. I guess you're right about the fact that the "scene" has changed considerably. Metal itself certainly has. It seems that the people that are putting out Metal are not so much interested in image, just as you said, as they are mass appeal. There are good bands out there but very little substance. That has been my complaint with most "popular" music.. lack of substance.
I suppose it comes down to comparing a group like Pentagram with a more recent act. As you said, the guys in Pentagram never "sold out". But they are the exception. Management and Record companies are looking for acts they can sell on a mass scale. Independant labels still sign smaller acts but the bigger companies are looking for marketing appeal. Besides, spending your career working in small clubs and bars for a few hundred dollars is a brutal way to make a living. Hard work, little pay. But...well, you get to play music, right?
Of course, there are still those "musicians" out there that claim they cannot handle being a "nine to fiver" or doing a "regular" job so music is all they know and all they want to do. They continue to chase that particular career and are willing to do "whatever it takes" to "make it" and that almost always means selling out. [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by J.D. Unless your name is Halford, your chances of making a lot of money in Metal are VERY low. There are not a lot of albums flying off the shelves in that genre. Sad but true.
It would seem that making money in music is easiest if you sing (speak?) through a synthesizer to pre-recorded music and have a half dozen lame dancers writhing around behind you doing some moronic, synchronized "moves". Not a lot of real "talent" there but, well ..you get the idea. I guess the point is, what is it that a band or an act are looking for? WHY do they do it? Fame? Money? Seems to me that the MUSIC is far less important to the "buying" public. |

There is a reason for this folks.....
It's called making money and losing touch with the grit you started with.
If you notice it happens to most bands that end up "making it".

Oh man those pics make me laugh and cringe at the same time! Horrible! Mushroomhead? Woohoo....................not.
I agree with you JD, Priest did not cultivate the leather and studs image for heavy metal just cos they felt like it. It's a symbol of the genre. All these so called 'metal' bands that flounce around in baggu jeans and baseball caps turned sideways are what we'd call here in NZ, try hards. They try too hard and just look like dicks in the end. Hehe incidentally we watched a new trailer the other day for that Brutal Legend video game (which looks cool and has an awesome soundtrack, Rob does a voice in the game too, along with other metal greats) and it was taking the piss out of these 'metal' bands that have DJs scratching records to the music and stuff. Oh I laughed LOL! It's sad that a lot of kids these days think that's what heavy metal is, when that's not it at all! But I think so long as real metal fans like everyone here keep the flames burning for real metal and keep the heavy metal faith, these kids and others will eventually learn what true metal is all about [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by guidogodoy from Thursday, September 24, 2009 3:18:10 PM) | | guidogodoy wrote: | | You did catch THIS laugh "metal photo fest" I posted some time ago, eh, J.D.? LOL! Thanks Bev. I WISH I looked as good as that model in the pics from the 70s and 80s! It's always fun. Robert Smith from The Cure was there as well as Kid Rock. I didn't know his first name is Robert. Robert Plant was a no show, but Bob Marley was there. I will post pics when my friend gets them to me. Thanks again! Hugs! Doll |

If it was not for priest & Sabbath the birth of metal would not have been...You can knock any of judas Priest members if you want but out of respect all should give thanks & hatts off to there creation of killer music that still is being played today.I've seen priest shows since the early 80's and they still rock the f-in roof off..And I have been a percussionist since the 80's to know good music..Yeah sure there are always going to be someone out there to degrade a killer musician.. |

I have never heard any credible account of him singing oprea, however in his pre priest days he did work in theater and im sure his pipes would have enabled him to excel at opera. Halford has always been a dramatic performer and in fact one of his very favorite singers is FRANK SINATRA who halford does a good impression of. also,my earliest memories of halford back in the early 80s,is how in interviews he always spoke of metal in eloquent and dignified terms. like a true ambassador,he regarded metal as a high art form. while other rockers were talking about how many jack daniels bottles they could insert into a groupie, halford was saying things like"i like to take metal to every country on earth". as a kid, that always struck a chord with me,his dedication to heavy metal. |
