To add to the confusion (and anyone who knows "The Best of JP" already knows the problem in that it is both a classic yet released early in JP's career), Heavy Metal Painkillers (Popoff) lists only five "official Judas Priest compilations":

The Best of Judas Priest, Gull (Feb, '78)

Hero, Hero (Gull, '81)

Priest, Live and Rare (Epic, March '98)

Metal Works '73-'93 (Columbia, April '93)

Metalogy (Sony, May '04)

ALL endorsed by the band down to the artwork. Contractual fallout with Gull and Epic locked up some of their earlier work and led to the animosity between JP and Gull / Epic. Anything outside these five (save for foreign releases of the same album) were subcontracted out to lesser labels and had absolutely no band involvement save contractual agreements vis a vis the residual $.

Right.... just let me get a note pad and pen..... I still can't agree that a band can have a "best of" only covering two albums, just because it was the first. Someone get a musical industry dictionary or the rule book and show me the passage that makes any "compilations" thereafter null and void.....

1989 "The collection"
licensed by Gull ("Hero, hero" different artwork)

1990 "Star box" - Japan release
Epic ESCA 5858
(my second Japan import, I have payd DM 59,99 for it!!)

1995 "Anthology"
licensed from Gull for Japan (Japan version of "Hero, hero")
first release of the songs in Japan!!

1996 "The beast of" (Yes "beast", not "best")
licensed by Gull ("Hero, hero" different artwork)

Good point about politics.  I was never much into the politics of it all ... too much for my simple mind to digest, especially when you only hear random bits and pieces.

Love the music, Love their stage presence!!! Think the word MD used in his blog ... Quintessential!

Good to point out especially because the "Insight" series was HORRIBLE!  Sad thing is that they trusted Gull. I have plenty of interviews where they say that they are thankful for them and their support in getting their music out to the masses. Therefore the "Best Of" was certainly endorsed by the band AT ONE TIME. It is just the politics that came AFTER that made thing go south. Sad Wings (and Rocka Rolla, if I am not mistaken...no album in front of me) was a GULL release, after all. They didn't really catch on until CBS+ took them.

Common to most musicians, I suppose. Learning curve. Thank strat for the Metal God label.

I believe the Gull statement regarding endorsements is accurate.  Click on discography tab, here at JP.com, scroll to the bottom of the page.

(same as Hero Hero with different artwork)

4.  Metal Works '73-'93
     2 CD's released in 1993
     2 CD's released in 2001*

Melissa, there can be only one "The best of...."
and this is "The best of..." from Gull, 'Cause it was
the first and so the first with this title too.
This is a fact and not Guido's and my opinion.

Here's the track list:

1. Dying to meet you
2. Never satisfied
3. Rocka Rolla
4. Diamonds and rust (of course the "Gull version")
5. Victim of changes
6. Island of domination
7. The ripper
8. Deceiver (Yes, without Dreamer Deceiver)

Well i think when it says "Remasters" on the side what the hell am i supposed to say.... errrrrr ummmmm ...... I think maybe what it says on the cover?.... You want to argue the technical terms, well fine.... I own a "compilation"..... Maybe i'll write an angry letter to Columbia records stating how rude it was of them to mislabel the CD in question....

And how can you say there is only "one best of"... yes in your opinion... and i will agree it's one hell of a track listing, and yes you all may have grown up with it. But it only covers the first 2 albums.... explain people!!!

So sorry! I'll take as many pictures as you like.

There were a few released. One travesty was the one with "Best of" on one side and "Sad Wings" on the other. Like you'd want to flip it over?!? (still hope you enjoy that one, Dawn! LOL!!).

The Milan version is hard to find but pops up on eBay every so often. The ONLY one to collect, IMO.

Hi Melissa, Susan & Guido
the cover from "Living after midnight" you have posted
is from the first release in 1997.
487242 2 / 02-487242-10
There are two versions:
1. The "normal" release
2. The Gold Edition

And there is the 3rd release from 2002
4872429000 / 487242 9
"The remasters" release.
Not a part of the original "The remasters" series,
but the cover is the same, with the silver coverage
from the "The remasters" series.
And you can read "The remasters" in the jewel box.

It's the same with Metal Works '73 - '93.
First release from 1993.
473050 2 / 01-473050-10
The second release from 2001
5021382000 / 502138 2
"The remasters" release.
Not a part of the original "The remasters" series,
but the cover is the same with the silver coverage
from the "The remasters" series too.
And you can read "The remasters" in the jewel box.

OK, on "Living after midnight" is written "The best of...."
but there's only one "The best of...." From Gull!!

Nice Guid! But I never ran across that one in my one horse town even when I used to special order albums at that time. Very nice indeed.
I need to tour, you "museum" sometime, it's a damn sight better than mine. BTW, I still have that promo DOF.

"Spell cheked" Learn to spell, "Yank without a gun!"

DC, I only stated the obvious as you corrected me on the "Best of JP." Nope, Album was never called that but keep in mind to whom you type. An old fart who LIVED AND DIED for the "Best of JP." A standard throughout my college years. Put it on and it was an instant party. SACRED, IOW! Own it some four times in four different formats.

I hold the line. Yours is not a "remaster." It is a compilation. There are at least four others that offer the "best of." However, to an old fart like me (and many like me) there is and will only be ONE "Best of Judas Priest." Gull - the Picture disc is even the exclusive Milan release (others came around from other countries...nothing close to the quality).

Jest a purist / obsessive collector sayin' ....

And Why, for the Metal God's sake!, would they put a "best of CD" in the remasters list! All the music is on all the other CD's! Now Soy, you are driving my blood pressure up! Your WRONG! Plain wrong.
That's it,.............off to bed! See how upset you have me! No............ On this point I AM right.
