Joe There are many ways to hold the pick, you just have to become accustomed to the way you do it , if you change.
The way you have it in the second pic is probably the most traditional way. Rotate  the pick to where the point is pointing at the bridge, just leave yourself enough pick to still use.  Pointing at the bridge, you have a longer area to pick with, but a much shallower area. This is the way to the harmonics. You still need to pluck the string all the while slighlty controlling the oscillation of the string( not muting). Example.... when you pick the string normally, it vibrates in an oblong but large pattern. By controlling the oscillation, you make the string vibrate in a more unifrom manner that is a much smaller (tighter)  pattern. Try to lightly touch or brush the string with your thumb while you pick , it will sound dull at first, but practice and it will come to you naturally.
Now as for holding it at an angle, depends on what type of attack you want. What speed etc.
Experiment is the best thing to do, but don`t be bound by tradiotn, try whatever works for you.
I the tips of my thumb and finger to hold the pick, not the back where the knuckle is.

I've been kind of interested in getting a new amp for a while and then I saw you guys talking about the Spider Valke MkII amp.1,500$ isn't a half bad price.

What do you guys think of the Spider valve MkII COMPARED to the Vetta? There both Line 6.
