My theory is that Democracy gives you the freedom to do whatever you want to do . . . until it interferes with someone else's right to do whatever they want to do. Think about it. Do you have the right to kill ? NO, because it interferes with the other person's right to live. Do you have the right to steal ? NO, because it interferes with someone else's right to work hard and earn those things. Etc, etc, etc. It's as simple as "The Golden Rule", do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I agree, except for one variable. I see Russia as more of a "loose cannon" today as opposed to the old Soviet Union. And let's face it, they still have all those nukes. If the president says that there is a cease fire and the troops aren't doing it there is only 2 possiblities. He's a liar & / or he has no control of the military. [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Craig Wagenhoffer from Monday, August 18, 2008 12:46:49 PM) | | Craig Wagenhoffer wrote: | | I don't think Russia is a real threat for the West right now. Let's not forget that it took the Russians almost a decade to regain full control over Chechnya, a tiny republic in the Northern Caucasus. Russia is the biggest country in the world and Chechnya has the same size as Connecticut. There over 140 million Russians and only 1 million Chechens. So go figure...
Russia is a big joke, they don't know how to run a country efficiently. There's a lot of violence, filth, racism and alcoholism down there. Many Russian men are obese and have a serious drinking problem. It's like planet of the apes down there. That's why the Russian population continues to decrease.
But the Russians and their sub-chimpanzee president want to make a statement and show the world that they are still one of the baddest gorillas in the jungle. So they attacked a dwarf state like Georgia, because they can't lose that war. Needless to say that I'm not impressed. The Russians are playing filthy games in the Caucasus. The war that's going on in Georgia right now is an old conflict. When the Soviet Union collapsed and Georgia declared it's independence, the ethnic Abkhaz people in Georgia's western province of Abhkazia made up only a whoppin' 18% of the population. The majority of the people in that province were Georgian. But with heavy support of the Russians the ethnic Abkhaz mountain people forced the entire Georgian population to leave the province. Between 10.000 and 30.000 Georgians were brutally murdered during this campaign of ethnic cleansing.
There's a very interesting article about this on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_cleansing_of_Georgians_in_Abkhazia Everyone should read this. If you don't want to read the entire article, than only read the testimonies. It's crazy stuff. It blew my mind! Just a little example:
"The local villagers (including women and children) were massacred while the church of St George became the scene of a blood bath. The nuns were raped and killed in front of the orthodox priests, father Yuri Anua and father Andria. Both priests were taken outside of the church and questioned about the ownership of the land in Abkhazia. After answering that Abkhazia was neither Georgian nor Abkhaz land but God's, they were shot by a confederate soldier."
Atrocities like these happened in the 1990's in Eastern Europe, they were committed by terrorists with heavy support of the Russians. That goes to show that the evil empire is still out there. (Quoting Message by TIMBONI from Sunday, August 17, 2008 9:05:53 PM)

This is really scary for me. I grew up seeing pictures of Bear bombers on the front page of the newspaper when they would come over the pole and get greeted by the squadron from Otis AFB. Difference here is the lack of structure. Russia still has all the firepower they used to have, but with no real centralized government. This could get really bad, really fast. If Iran fires up at the same time, welcome to hell ! |

THE ONLY GOOD THING IN WAR IS IT'S ENDING...PERIOD!!!!!!! ...
-SO RUSSIA IS A BIG JOKE?...THEY DON'T RUN THEIR COUNTRY EFFICIENTLY?...LAST TIME I CHECKED THE U.S. ECONOMY IS IN PRETTY ROUGH SHAPE AND HEADING SOUTH (BY THE WAY THIS TOO IS ALSO BEING STATED ALL OVER YOUR CNN ON A DAILY BASIS)
-THERE'S A LOT OF VIOLENCE,FILTH,RACISM AND ALCOHOLISM "DOWN THERE"??? ...MANY RUSSIAN MEN ARE OBESE/DRINKING PROBLEM....AND THESE PROBLEMS DON'T EXIST IN THE U.S.???...
-RUSSIA HAS SUB-CHIMPANZEE PRESIDENT....YEAAAAAH...OHHH I'M SORRY,I FORGOT ABOUT YOUR GUY 'DUBYA'.........WHO ALSO BY THE WAY IS APPROVED OF BY A WHOPPING 23% OR SO OF YOUR FELLOW COUNTRYFOLK!!!!!....WHO HAS BEEN CALLED ON CNN..."A COMPLETE EMBARRASSMENT ON EVERY LEVEL"
-THE U.S. IS NOT AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN...NO ONE IS!!!!!!!!!!...THE HUMAN RACE IS RACING TOWARDS THE BRICK WALL OF EXTINCTION AT A 1,000 MPH,WITH IT'S SEEMINGLY INFINITE STUPIDITY...AND YET CERTAIN COUNTRIES AND SOME OF IT'S PEOPLE SEEM TO THINK THEY'RE HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THE REST... THERE IS CORRUPTION IN EVERY COUNTRY ON THIS PLANET,NONE ARE WITHOUT...YOUR OWN COUNTRY IS SELLING IT'S CITIZENS OUT LEFT AND RIGHT,IN THE NAME OF PROFIT...YES,IT'S HAPPENING IN MY COUNTRY ALSO,DON'T WORRY,I'M AWARE OF THAT FACT.
- RUSSIA IS A THREAT...HOWEVER SO IS THE U.S.,CHINA,IRAN,NORTH KOREA,PAKISTAN,
INDIA AND OTHERS AS FAR AS WAR GOES...NO ONE COUNTRY IS ABOVE DOING THE INCORRECT THING,SOME JUST DISGUISE THEIR INTENTIONS AND LONG-TERM GOALS BETTER THAN OTHERS.
IS THE ONLY WAY...IF ANOTHER MAJOR CONFLICT ERUPTS,I FEAR MORE THAN JUST ONE OR TWO OF THE PRINCIPAL COMBATANTS WILL SUFFER,MANY,MANY WILL DIE...VERY LIKELY EVEN IN YOUR COUNTRY AND MINE.

I don't think Russia is a real threat for the West right now.

Well Some are saying there's Different reasons why the Russians are there. One of them is that Georgia which is a former Satellite State of the Soviet Union wants NATO membership and The Russian Government is Vehemetly oopossed to it because apparently they see NATO as a threat to them and already a few Former Soviet Bloc countries are now NATO members one of them being Poland and another the Czech Republic . Apparently the Ukraine is seeking NATO membership as well.Analysts say that Russia sees that as a growing concern because it's happening right at there Doorstep.Other reasons are there is an oil pipeline running through there to the Caspian Sea which is in Both the interests of the United States and Russia. Despite that there are break away states from Georgia that the Russians are saying that Georgia will not get back these are supposed to be some of the reasons. |

Seems planned to me. It would take some time to mass those forces on their border before an attack? Attacking when the worlds eyes were watching something else? Almost to the moment the olympics began? Edited at: Sunday, August 17, 2008 6:25:21 AM |

Not only that,, Russia threaten Poland with nukes because of the missile agreement with the United States. The media seems to think that Russia is trying to get back the old Soviet Union.
