A "harsh way" to put it? Are we supposed to be "kind" to racist assholes who quit liking a band because the singer is gay?

Rob and Priest have gained fans from this if anything so they replace those losers. Fuckin nazi racist assholes!!!

You put that very succinctly HRMG! As for the rock n roll hall of fame, it's a complete load of crap! I mean, Run DMC is in! Madonna is in! WTF! But no Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Priest or Maiden. Load of hooey.

I would have to say that they really aren't fans if they leave because Rob is gay rather than for a reason based on the MUSIC!! Fans are people that stick around through thick and thin. For some that was Turbo, for others it was the Ripper era and for some it is Nostradamus. The people that left because Rob is gay were NEVER TRULY fans and therefore, Priest didn't really lose anything when those people left (in my opinion)!! Priest wants to play to fans that KNOW and LOVE their music, not to a full house with no one singing!

I've never cared very much about what is "popular" anyway. I just wish that Priest would finally receive the praise and recognition that they deserve!! Why are they not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Why don't they win Grammy's? Now that's a bunch of crap!

I'm glad those fans don't like Judas Priest anymore because Rob is gay because it "exposes" thier ignorance.    Bunch of fuckin contradicting racist bastards.

"I think now, as far as image and identity are concerned, we've got the whole thing down pat and it's pretty solid. I don't think we'll ever really deviate to any degree from our physical presentation because you know how important it is to maintain a certain level of imagery, so that when people think of Rob Halford, or whomever else in the band, they instantly paint a mental picture of the way you are rather than just your music. They remember the whips and the motorbikes. The whole process of imagery now, I think, is important or even more important than it has been in the past. I think the identity side of it is crucial to a certain extent. Bands don't get anywhere if they're faceless. You can have the greatest sounding album in the world, but if people can't relate to an individual or to the group as a whole in their appearance, then the band isn't really getting anywhere."- Rob Halford, Heavy Metal Times, November 1982

"That was another turning point for the band. Rob was very instrumental in laying down laws and codes for what heavy metal bands should wear at that point in time. The whole leather image stemmed from that era and now it's just accepted that's what goes with heavy metal. Up to that point, it was spandex and satin trousers, or even jeans and T-shirts."- Glenn Tipton, Heavy Duty official biography, 1984

I think most people who attend concerts whether it be Priest or Maiden or Metallica or whoever  tend to be casual rather than die hard fans. A lot of them won't have every single release by them and I reckon most of them have never been near the JP forum either.

I bet  if you did a straw poll many people in a Priest concert wouldn't be able to name all their releases as well. And does it matter? If you put a ban on them because "they are not real fans" Priest would be playing to unfilled veneus.

I dont know the technical terms either (are most priest fans more musicaly knowledgable than fans of other bands?)
I do notice a marked change in style with british steel, and again with painkiller.  then of course rob left....

its actualy not the converting the casual I think that is the problem, its getting the casual fan to begin with.  how many maiden "fans" are there that cant name half the CD's they have put out, and own edward the great and one other.  priest doesnt have those "fans"

IDK HB ... though they push the musical boundaries the music can be associated with them (wish I could use the appropriate technical terms), but it is definitely distinguishable; the guitar style, tone, etc is KK & Glenn, vocals definitely Rob / Ripper.  'Has something to do with production but if you know the sound you recognize the band.  Sorry, don't know how better to describe it.  I think it's been up to the diehards to Baptize the casual!  If they don't convert, well that is on us - lol
[Deep Freeze] Thursday, August 06, 2009 8:18:52 AM
Ah yes! The voice of reason! HAAAAAAAAAA!  Actually, I do not think the "popularity" would be affected much (outside of the fanbase) because if you look at what passes for "popular" music today, it is the finished "product" that is LEAST important!! From what I see, all you need is a synthesizer on your mic, a pre-recorded drumbeat, a few dancers writhing around behind you and some cheap dance moves and you are a "popular" artist. Hardly much of a MUSICAL product involved at all.
[Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Bev from Thursday, August 06, 2009 8:10:38 AM)
[Head banger] Thursday, August 06, 2009 8:15:56 AM
IMO Judas Priest would be more popular not if Rob was straight but if Rob had never left the band. but what you going to do?  my time machine is on the fritz.

they would also be more popular if Gull didnt own the rights to the first 2 albums.  I say this cause as a kid every time I saw a new cover in the tape store, I would read th back and know that I had all the songs on one tape or another.  then a new tape.... same thing.

the radical changes in their musical style probably didnt help atract casual fans, after all, maiden is maiden no mater which disc it is.  priest keeps pushing new boundries, which is great for the dedicated fans, but keeps the casual fans confused
[Bev] Thursday, August 06, 2009 8:10:38 AM
... at the end of the day, would it not be the music (the finished product) that determines the band's popularity? Only a thought to include lively discussion ; )
[Deep Freeze] Thursday, August 06, 2009 8:04:59 AM
OK, I guess my POINT would be; there are a number (how MANY, I cannot say) of people that know of Priest by virtue of Rob's sexuality.  If the "mainstream" media ignore it or exploit it, the fact remains that there is a correlation of some kind. I am not sure what goes on in the UK, Canada or anywhere else but I DO know that I have run into many people that have only known Priest as "that band with the gay singer". You cannot get around that by using math to determine a figure that represents a percentage of world populace and then saying it is irrelevant. There IS relevance. It may be insignificant to you and I...but it exists. I do not believe there is any more or less POPULARITY but there is certainly a number that would represent more recognition and when you make your living selling music to the masses, recognition makes a difference.

Recognized and popular are two different things...they maybe are recognized more now because of it, but I don't think the band is more popular now because of it.
[J.D. DIAMOND] Thursday, August 06, 2009 4:23:20 AM

Yes spapad that is correct.  Look at this picture of "Venom" from 1981 .....Venom created "black metal" and the members "Cronos,Abbadon and Mantis" are not gay,....

Cronos even said that he got his leather, studs and spikes image from "Rob Halford" and Judas Priest because they set the standard of what metal's image looked like.

It wasn't a trend and the other bands were not ripping Halford off,but that image fit for not only heavy metal...but for black metal and the true old school death metal bands as well.

The most abrasive bands in the extreme metal underground like old "Deicide", old "Morbid Angel"  and "Mayhem" with Euronymous(r.i.p.)knew Rob was gay and didn't even

think long enough about it to give a rats! I've read articles where they mention Rob Halford as an influence that got them into metal in the first place.   Its crazy to sit back and

look at what Rob created with heavy metal's image.....and still to this day...in my opinion studs, spikes, chains, denim & leather, bullet belts, pins on jackets, finger cut black gloves..ect....

all of these aesthetics are needed in heavy metal ....not that a band will be "good" just because they were the image, but without it...they really don't have a chance to continue the
..
true spirit of early Traditional British styled Heavy Metal ......I can't count the many times someone says : "Heres a heavy metal band for you to listen to"....and then I listen to it and

it doesn't sound heavy metalish.....and then I look at the band's photo and low and behold? Its a bunch of college frat rockers with baggy jungle pants the kind that the ass hangs down

and almost touches the floor...with a Hockey jersey on ( "nothing against hockey fans but it doesn't belong in metal" ) with a freaking "BASEBALL HAT" on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOFL!!!!!

And absolutely " NOTHING AGAINST PEOPLE WHO WEAR BASEBALL HATS"....its just that they don't belong in heavy metal's image.   Bands that play a rock/and heavy metal seem to

be able to wear a mix between heavy metal and a rock image like Saxon...they play traditional heavy metal like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden but they also write "rock songs" and have always

said they are heavy metal/rock band.....Paul Quinn, one of the guitarists wears a baseball hat but usually wears a leather vest and ect....  Motorhead is a hard rock band and not a heavy metal band

so Lemmy's image has always been the same.....    But  Rob sure set the standards of heavy metal and its quite awsome on a massive scale how he himself not only wore the gay biker outfits but also

wore the total traditional heavy metal image. What a guy!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps I missread, but to be honest, I don't find it to be of great importance. I do feel Rob influenced the whole look of metal by simply chosing the ruff boy gay look of the seventies to gear up priest, and Metal fans everywhere embrassed what was first a gay image and made it there own and to this day, if you see that much leather you know, you talking Metal. Fine by me! I love it!

In that case, my previous points still stand! If Priest were not in the media on those occasions purely because of Rob's sexuality, then they cant be used as examples of them being more known about purely because of that. Like I say, Ive only known of one occasion where Rob's sexuality has been specifically mentioned in the mainstream media. lol

totally agree with you freeze unfortunatly it does make a difference.definatly not to me or probably any one here but out there(i am pointing out my window).i see it all the time.people look at me funny at times just look at me for a couple of seconds then say he,s gay  or they yell shit at me like the 3 letter f word on 4 letter h word when they are passing by me when i am riding my bicycle on the road  or where ever.thats why maiden is so much more popular.most definatly there not a better band.alot of people (no offence intended) dont have the BALLS TO DEFEND HALFORD THE METAL GOD AND PRIEST so they go to stinking maiden.no offence intended .

His sexuality was not the issue of them being in the mainstream media, it's the fact that JP are an incredible band.
They appeared on Jimmy Kimmel live last year, which was a late night talk show here. They are still in so many Metal Mags, Rolling Stone still covers them, they were up for what, two Grammys last year? I'd say they don't fly completly under the radar!
Thank God they are not covered in the way all media portrays half the celebrities in this world, talk about a dirty landryfest on the behalf of the media, it's disgusting to be so intrusive into anyone's life.

Seeing as I live in the UK, I didnt know about that :P

Maybe it is different in the American mainstream media, but certainly in the UK, neither Rob, nor Priest are really any more in the media now, then before he came out. If it's different in the US, then I take back what I said in my previous post lol

CNN ran it as a headline story when Rob and Priest reunited. I'd say that is about as mainstream as you can get.

I think you overestimate the amount of people who only know about Priest through Rob's sexuality. I think very few people outside of the metal community have any idea about Judas Priest, let alone Rob's sexuality. Most outside of the metal community only know what the mainstream media feeds them, and I dont think Rob or Priest are much more in the mainstream media now, than before Rob came out of the closet. Maybe you have heard a lot about it in the mainstream media, but I certainly havent. I think one time a few years ago, I saw Graham Norton mention Rob on his show, but aside from that one time, I've yet to see Rob's sexuality mentioned in any mainstream media, outside of specifically metal publications. Im sure there are a tiny minority of people who know about Priest now, but wouldnt have if Rob wasnt gay. But to say its "a lot of people", I think is overestimating it.

HA!!! He's not our equal J.D.! He is The Metal God, and we are but poor serfs who would only be so lucky to be graced by his presence!    I am kidding of course but he is one superior human being and so are the rest of the guys, that is why their fans love them! They are down to earth real kind people!

Yes, my friend. We do love him. And so do tens of thousands of people all around the world. I don't think there is any question that Rob Halford is respected and loved. That is true. I think what it really comes down to is, there are a lot of people that do not care for Metal and do not know his work but they DO know about his sexuality. You cannot ignore that. It makes a difference in so much as the number of human beings that are aware of the Band. It does make a difference.

Yes Freeze...I agree. There are a lot of people who don't know Judas Priest that well and connect the fact that "Isn't that the band with the gay guy singing"?  They don't say that in a negative way ..

they are just trying to make that connection and some people may take that the wrong way,but the average person who asks this is not meaning any disrespect or what not.

If Rob were to log on this forum right now,he would be flattered that so many of us accept him for what he is...an "EQUAL" to each and every one of us.  We love you Rob!!!!!!!

Hmm.. I have tried to avoid commenting only because I detest yet ANOTHER moronic Thread but I suppose I will throw in my "two cents" on the subject...AGAIN.

YES. Rob's sexuality DOES make a difference! I have said that before and I hold to that position today. It is OH so chic to make flowery speeches about how "it doesn't matter" and "true fans don't care" and whatnot and, of course, to those of us that are TRUE fans, it doesn't. The fact remains, there is a HUGE number of people in this world that only know Priest because "they have that gay guy" singing for them. We have ALL heard that comment in some form.

The fact that Rob Halford is a gay man in a Heavy Metal band IS a big deal. It is noteworthy and it has brought them attention where they may never had received any. There is a large portion of people that know about the band because Rob is openly gay and THAT makes it part of the equation, regardless of whether or not one believes it "matters".  Matters how???  Matters from a talent standpoint? No. From an ability standpoint? No. By saying "it does not matter", one is suggesting (I assume) that he still can sing. This is quite true. But the topic here is "Would Priest be more popular" if Rob were NOT gay. I believe the answer is, no. They would not be "more" popular.  There would likely be no significant difference as far as popularity is concerned. Today's "popular" music is chock full of gay people.

I think the more appropriate comment would be that they would not be as well known be as many people. That seems like a safe bet. They will always have a fanbase.  They will always have the achievements they have. Gay or straight, I doubt that would be affected. Popularity? Nah, I doubt that as well. Notoriety? THAT is a possibility. By this fact alone, it DOES make a difference.

Priest are one of the most influental metal bands of all times. Most people prefer to listen to crap so I believe that in musical terms Rob is one of the best performers/singers of metal and music in general.Any one who doesn't listen to Priest's music just because of Rob' s sexuality then he/she doesn't know anything about music at all.Judas Priest are one of the  most  famous matal bands. This band would have the same fame if Rob was straight... these things don't matter musically speakin
[Becks] Wednesday, August 05, 2009 4:38:49 PM
I agree with everyone else. Robs sexuality does not affect the popularity of Priest, and neither should it. I could care less that he is gay. He could be gay, straight, whatever, and he would still be the Metal God!! It does not matter to true fans.
[J.D. DIAMOND] Wednesday, August 05, 2009 4:36:13 PM
Absolutely Angelic Storm, absolutely.  I agree 100%.  I think if anything...Rob coming out of the closet has made Judas Priest more popular, but as you've said....
nobody really cares about Rob's personal lifestyle.   He is the Metal God and we are all proud of him the way he is. You gotta love that guy!!!!!!!!  Rob rulz!!!

Er no. Elton John was pretty popular and he's gay (Allegedly)

If Priest wanted to be more popular they'd be like Bon Jovi. Can't see them doing thatt

The first point, is who cares? Real metal fans dont care how "popular" a band is. As for them being more "popular" if Rob was straight, I really dont think it would have made any difference at all. In fact, if anything, they are more revered now, and considered legends today, than before Rob came out of the closet. A small minority of "fans" did turn their back on Priest because of Rob's sexuality, but hardly enough to make a real dent in their fanbase. And I doubt Rob, or the rest of the band are sorry to see the back of such "fans" anyway. I have seen a few idiots making malicious comments about Rob and Priest because of his sexuality, but in the main, I think the metal community accepted Rob, which is as it should be.
[Head banger] Wednesday, August 05, 2009 7:41:46 AM
well... when metal was at its peak they were not the most popular (dunno why) and most people didnt know he was gay.  I dont know anyone who cares now.
[Bev] Wednesday, August 05, 2009 6:01:25 AM
IMO ... it's a wash.  The fairweather friends & fans that didn't like this aspect of Rob's nature left ... and were quickly replaced.  Loyalty runs steadfast and deep for the truly faithful! Being popular means nothing to a true metalhead, and I think it's never meant a whole helluva lot to  'Priest either!

i would have to say if the METAL GOD was not gay ALL the MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO HEAVY MEEETTTT    TTTTAAAALLLLL THE METAL GOD ROB HALFORD gave would not have happened because he would be a completely different person than the one we all know and love so much.his thoughts and ideas would all be different. .so in other words i would have to say HEAVY METAL wouldn,t even exsist in my opinion
[J.D. DIAMOND] Tuesday, August 04, 2009 4:05:31 PM
To be fair...MP was just "asking a question"........well, in my opinion I don't think Priest would be "more popular" if Rob was "straight".

If anything....him being gay probably made the band "more popular" now, because you have people who don't know that much about

Judas Priest and some may make that connection that  "Isn't that the band with a gay singer"? So it may have made them more

popular than ever before. But they definately would not be "more popular" if Rob wasn't Gay.        I don't know why people out there

have a problem with "gay people"(and I'm not saying that forum member "MP" has a problem with gay people just to clear that up)

but it really baffles me. There was a dweeb on the Saxon forum a while back  that is an Iron Maiden "fanboy" and he was bashing

Rob saying rude childish comments towards Rob's sexual preference and the Saxon Administrator "banned his account"...just like that!

Too bad we don't have that Administrator in here....Murray does a killer job,but a moderator would take care of stupid people.

But nonetheless...the whole Saxon forum members trashed this dickhead before he was banned.  But going back to Rob.....

This guy should be proud(and he is)of who he is and one word describes him best....."CLASS".

(Sorry Freeze, I couldn`t help myself)
[HOT ROCKIN' METAL GODDESS] Tuesday, August 04, 2009 12:08:12 PM

Halford's being gay has NOTHING to do with it!! Absolutely NO ONE ON THIS PLANET can hold a candle to him as a man or as a singer!! Most people don't even mention it and when others do talk about it, they say, "Who cares? He's the BEST!" When Rob returned to Priest, people crammed into the shows welcoming the return of the METAL GOD. I just think they are too complex and the lyrics are too deep for the masses to get. The general public likes things simple - songs with few words so they can remember it and lots of repitition. Priest continues to change, album after album, and most people don't like change.

It makes me VERY sad that there are actually tickets available to the Florida show that's being taped for DVD release...... other bands would have sold out the second it was announced! They should have taped it in Detroit - we had an AWESOME turnout!!
