Judge what,if old Iron Maiden is any good? Hell yeah the old Maiden, just the band's first 5 albums in the early 80's  only and no other albums are top quality classic British Heavy Metal ontop of thier game "big time" and I can see even if people think these 5 albums are better than "any" Saxon era ( while I still think that Lionheart and The Inner Sanctum are equal to Piece Of mind and Powerslave ) but man as I love to keep saying  try and compare the two bands these last 15 years and Iron Maiden is such a freaking disappointment and such a display of  "boring progressive bullshit crap song writting" while Saxon has cranked out 8 studio albums of top quality british heavy metal/rock.

Outside the internet  I've asked "TONS"  and "TONS" of metal fans if they like Maiden these last 20 years and honestly none of them do but always just say "thier concerts are cool though". Maiden and Metallica just ride off thier 80's albums and will never be able to capture a new studio LP that old school vibe and its sad.   Also these same "tons" of metal fans that I've asked......none of them new who Saxon was HAHAHA!

Fuckin totally Becks!   Man in the 80's Maiden were so much better than Saxon it wasn't even a comparison in my opinion. Then in 1995 ....BAM!  The tables turned and ever since Saxon has been kicking the living SHIT out of the watered down boring overrated progressive folk/rock band that is sadly now "Iron Maiden".  Maiden is a fuckin "JOKE" compared to Saxon these days.

Saxon in the 1980's were nowhere near the greatness of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, nowhere near as you couldn't even compare Saxon to either band and the image Saxon had was a mear joke, with mediocre albums that couldn't match up to Piece Of Mind,Number Of The Beast,Powerslave,Defenders Of The Faith ect....

But that changed in 1995 when Saxon released the Dogs Of War LP and ever since they have put out so much better albums than Maiden has.Now in my opinion you can't even begin to compare Iron Maiden to the greatness of Saxon and its been like this for 16 years now.

 Classic 80's Maiden.

[spapad] Saturday, July 23, 2011 8:33:37 PM
Oh wow, they translated the poem to modern english. Not too hard to do. There's no creation there, only interpretation. Not trying to stomp on you but it's true. That song came from the 1700's and I like it. Some kids would never know literature if not for Bruce. But they did not write it.

You do know that they actually wrote a good chunk of the song don't you? They took exerpts from the Coolridge's poem and used them as lyrics, but a lot of the song was their musical adaptation of the poem. If you don't believe me then look up the poem and then look up the song.

Maiden of course is timeless, universal, transcendent (my fav probably Die With Your Boots On).  What awesome names for metal bands though:  Iron Maiden and Saxon.  Makes me want to touch myself.  (Hope that isn't too crude for the Judas Priest intra net?)

[fernando001] Thursday, July 14, 2011 3:09:49 AM
Are you kidding me? Maiden hands down easily by a mile!!! Saxon is great but they could never write a song as epic as the Rime of the Ancient Mariner or pull off a chorus with as much power as the one in Cought Somewhere in Time. I'd also take Maiden's new material, but that's just me :P
[PlasmaShock] Wednesday, July 13, 2011 10:59:32 PM

A shot just for you, J.D. My last day / night was in Paris. I'd been there many times so just get a bottle of champagne and head to Notre Dame to sit in the park to admire the structure of the building. It sits in the Seine river and all up and down the walkway are street vendors. One in particular caught my attention. I would have bought it but don't trust things on the street as being original. No Priest but check it out! Supporting groups especially.

With this being a Priest site, I have found most Maiden fans can't stand Priest but Saxon are more like Priest than Maiden in their sound, that's why most people will prefer Saxon here.

All I can say is who can blame them? HAHA Saxon kick more ass, they're harder hitters their music is powerful and the riffs are heavier than Hell. I honestly think that's what Maiden lack, they're classed as heavy metal and yet the riffs let's face it just aren't heavy.

If only Saxon hadn't flopped in the 80's they'd be up their with Priest and Maiden now doing larger shows. But one thing is certain the music they are playing now certainly fulfills my metal needs.

Here is "When Doomsday Comes" off the new album,Saxon didn't put this on youtube as some fan did so the sound quality isn't good but you can still hear the new track, totally excellent song, reminds me of the Lionheart album!

The album 'Call To Arms" comes out Monday May 23rd.

Rudy63....your post makes Saxon up 20 votes to Iron Maiden's 5 ....."WOW".  This is really impressive for Saxon man, this really shows that Saxon are without a doubt writting much much better songs these days than Iron Maiden are. Sure Saxon will never be as popular as Maiden are but really who cares?

This shows that the Maiden fans are going to the concert to hear the 1980's songs, not the post 80's crap they write these days(except for AMOLAD) and this thread shows that there are more metal fans that like Saxon over Maiden these days, and rightfully so.

Greendew. If you think the  airplay in the States is bad you should have a listened to the radio here in the UK the last 30 years Metal was totally ignored !!!  During the 80s we had the Friday rock show for 2 hours between 10 & midnight 2 hours a week  Nationally! and that came to an end years back. There may be odd local stations with a late night "rock" show which play at best progressive rock. If you're lucky you might get, run to the hills or wheels of steel or maybe AC~DC & thin lizzy if they're feeling like going wild. There's Planet Rock now, which just plays a hell of a lot of progressive stuff like Pink Flloyd , Yes, Foreigner , Boston Bonjovi, Breakfast in America by Supertramp is always on and so it goes on. If you get anything decent , they seem to play the same songs by each band over and over !!

Compared to this When, i was over in the States a few years ago it was a novelty to be able to tune into different radio stations during the day time while driving through  and actually hear heavy rock played, to the extent I remember my daughter saying when we first got there "Dad they are actually playing Dio on the radio here"!

I live in the states where sadly bands like Saxxon just have never been that big : \  Just look at our lame Rock and Roll hall of fame to see the kind of taste America has......Dont misunderstand me I love this country but, there taste in music is lacking sadly in the hard rock/metal department. we are foce fed on the radios what coperations think we like  o.0

[J.D. DIAMOND] Sunday, April 24, 2011 3:20:34 PM
Yep thats the way it was here in the states too Rik.  Maiden didn't so much sell out to a wider audience as you know but thier song writting starting from 1990's poor quality album "No Prayer For The Dying" all the way till 2010's poor quality album The Final Frontier has sucked BIG TIME.  from 1990 to 2010 they wrote 8 studio albums and only 1 of them are decent"A Matter Of Life And Death". Brave New World only has 4 songs that are worth a shit, the other 6 songs suck balls.

Saxon sold out big time, but had come back full circle and proved themselves to the metal world they are quality british heavy metal and have been for 16 years.

The Maiden fanboy created this thread 5 months ago thinking that everybody would be flocking towards Maiden and posting Maiden over Saxon, but this back fired on his ass big time with Saxon grabbing 17 votes and with Maiden only grabbing 5 votes over 5 months. That shows how lame Iron Maiden really is these last 20 years.  Pretty sad when a band has to live off the early 1980's for fan's opinions here in 2011,absolutely "sad".

Hey Maiden fanboy.....17 to 5 Saxon is kicking your lame band's ass these last 16 years and counting HAHA!!! Keep living in the 80's haha!!!

Well as you said Saxon from 1995 and onwards writes BETTER metal songs as 17 of us agree with only 5 that disagree. With that being said its easy for me to come up with 12 Saxon tracks,I could pick 12 tracks spread throughout 8 studio albums but for Maiden, its limited.

I hate the whole album of The X Factor,I hate the entire album of Virtual Eleven, hate the entire album of Dance Of Death and hate the entire album of The final Frontier.

So that only leaves me Brave New World where I only like 4 songs and A Matter Of life And Death where I like 8 songs with 2 that suck.

But there are many combinations of 12 tracks I could give as examples of Saxon that would totally blow away these 12 tracks between Brave New World and AMOLAD.

So ....NO COMPARISON,Saxon wins every time with material from 1995 to 2011 over Maiden.  Maiden is better in the 1980's and thats where they are going to stay with the MAJORITY of our opinions in this thread, and many many people outside this thread also agree with our opinions that Saxon  from 95'  till today are so much better than Maiden from 1990 to 2011.

Its sad a band such as Iron Maiden is locked into the 1980's when asked about "quality material",as 90% of fans say thier last 20 years suck balls. When asked about Saxon, they all rave about how good they are these last 16 years, its amazing. Maiden is like Metallica, they are locked into the 1980's when asked about "quality song writting" and quality albums.

Saxon up 17 to 5  and obviously they should be.

During the late 80s & through the 90s, heavy rock / metal generally lost it's street cred, at least it did here in the UK, not just Saxon . The two magazines here which had traditionally flown the flag for metal became full of bands which had no business being in there in my opinion, chilli peppers, Faith no more, grunge bands etc etc', it got virtually no radio air time either, and traditional metal was pushed out & poked fun at or portrayed as old hat. Only bands like Metallica or Guns & roses (another band living off the sale of one album) seemed to be spared the rod. Saxon were often treated with little respect, but they stuck to their guns like Motorhead, Priest and the likes, and they rode out the storm while other bands either fell by the wayside or tried to appeal to a wider audience.

How about doing a top 12 saxon and a top 12 Maiden 'best of ' from 1995 onwards ?
would be interesting..hmmmmmm let me think...

I absolutely agree Soccer Star,Maiden were much bettter in the 80's but from 1995 to 2011 Saxon are better and with 17 people saying so and only 5 people said Maiden are better nowadays.  17 to 5 shows Saxon are much better song writters than Iron Maiden these last 16 years and counting.

For me.. overall.. Maiden are better than Saxon but of the later years i think Saxon write better real Metal songs.
In the 80s Maiden were kings but from the mid 90s onwards Saxon have released some strong albums and i think  people tend to over look em.

It seems to me that Saxon lost some street cred around the mid to late 80s but  did manage to turn it around from 'Dogs Of War' (1995) onwards.
In the early 80s Saxon and Maiden were pretty much neck n kneck but Maiden remained consistant where as Saxon didn't..

This is my view anyway.

You've been right all along man, a band that could do a cover like this has to be better than Maiden. They set the standard for classic metal with this one.

I love Cross's version but this ... wow ... the guitar and the harmonies ... geez ... knocks me off my feet.!!!!

lmao

Saxon - Hammer Of The Gods - 2011 Call To Arms

Yes The Final Frontier sucks big balls Rik,its flat and boring to say the least. Lets face it,Saxon nowadays DESTROYS Maiden, and writes better songs for british heavy metal while Maiden is writting long boring flat dull folk/rock.

As you say priest & particularly saxon kept it going. All this talk had me playing Final frontier in the car today. I've only played it once before since I bought it, and seeing a we have tickets for the tour this summer I thought i'd give it anoher go but apart from maybe  a couple of tracks I cant get into it. too long winded. A bit like the lst one.

Well ya know I don't really think thats the case with Maiden,I mean look at Priest after Turbo the same year as Somewhere In Time 1986...they at least had Ram It Down which was better than 1990's No Prayer album, and of course we have Painkiller 1990 same year as No Prayer...even Jugulator was better than ANYTHING Maiden did in the 1990's. And of course Angel Of Retribution totally smokes anything Maiden has done since Powerslave, thats for sure.

Look at Saxon...thier first 5 studio albums (1979 - 1983) were good (not as good as 80's Maiden though) then from 1984 to 1992 they wrote 6 shit albums in a row. But they snapped out of it starting in 1995 with Dogs Of War and changed thier image to a normal rock/heavy metal band like they should be instead of thier silly 1980's image and the song writting from that album....up to now 2011 Call To Arms the last 8 studio albums Saxon has written has been the best material they have ever done in my opinion(and many others too).

Why can't Maiden do this? Priest and Saxon at least recovered from thier shitty albums but Maiden keeps writting these boring lame dull albums.Brave New World to me is only half good just like Point Of Entry, sure half of it is cool but the other half sucks balls. Dance Of Death I hate the entire album,AMOLAD I do like minus the two shit singles  & videos and The Final Frontier is all SHIT.

Steve Harris is the reason Maiden sucks,he is also the reason the old Maiden albums(1980 - 1984) is so good. He just forgot how to write killer albums. Maiden should of returned Eddie back to the streets like he was in Killers, and numberous drawings ect...and harken thier sound back to Piece Of Mind/Number Of The Beast....

Thats what formula they should of gone with because I think it would of sparked the quality of the song writting. This progressive shit like The Final Frontier is so much further progressed than A Matter Of Life And Death its not even funny, its like a "folk/rock album" not a british heavy metal album.  Saxon just stays within thier bounderies and uses the same formula and thier fans love them for it.

Maybe we're just old stick in the muds JD "caught some where in time" !! , but I agree to some extent with what you say, I've not really bought much Metallica since master of puppets and likes Def Leppard appeal to a totally different audience to what they did in their first couple of albums.
Must be hard for likes of maiden & metallica though to follow up early successes and keep it going for years If they don't do something a bit different they get accused of every album being the same like AC/DC or Status Quo, they'll not win many new fans but at least you know what you're getting. I think some bands just get too big if that's possible?

Whatever it may be,Iron Maiden has "SUCKED" for the last 25 years now(1986 Somewhere In Shit album) with only one decent album(2006).  The Final Frontier is utterly a gross display of shit, its boring, and spanks of shit song writting.

This band used to crank out cult classics like Where Eagles Dare,Flash Of The Blade,The Prisoner,To tame A Land,Aces High,Wrathchild,Phantom Of The Opera...and then came the Somewhere In Shit album....sure Seventh Son was ok,and then 2006's A Matter Of Life And Death was "ok" but everything else is shit.

After Powerslave and since they wrote the Somewhere In Crap album they have "NEVER RECOVERED".  There are a small percentage of fan..(a small) that like the newer Maiden just as much as the old,but not many. Thats like saying there are a small percentage of fans that like the shit Turbo album too. Same thing.  Iron Maiden are the 2nd biggest disappointment in metal history with Shitallica at number one.

Speaking in general, I reckon what sometimes happens is bands develop as musicians from the early days and want to showcase this in their albums. You often hear them saying it in interviews. This  seems in many cases, to result in songs becoming technical magnum opuses, or concept albums. Sometimes though it's the rawness of the earlier music which attracted a lot of people to them, many of who are not accomplished musicians ourselves and don't appreciate the "improved" direction of the newer stuff. Probably this is why after a while you get a back to their roots album.

I remember that documentary a few years ago featuring Saxon where Harvey Goldsmith the PR man was trying to basically commercialise the band sound to appeal to a new audience. The band didn't like what he had planned for them and told him it was great  to get  new fans, but they had fans who'd been following them for nearly 30 years to consider too.

Yes,Saxon are much better song writters these days than Maiden is. Maiden's albums after Seventh Son are shit besides a few songs and one album I like "A Matter Of Life And Death" besides the 2 shit songs on the album Different World and Benjamin Bragg(yuk) the album's 8 other songs are decent for what Iron maiden is these days but the album is nowhere near Seventh Son...which Seventh Son is nowhere near Powerslave...which is nowhere near Piece Of Mind,Number Of The Beast,Killers or Iron Maiden debut album.

So in general the last 21 years of Maiden is crap, just because I like one album doesn't mean I like post 1988 Iron Maiden.  Saxon on the other hand have 8 studio albums in a row that are top notch 1995's Dogs Of War up to thier new album Call To Arms, the band is amazing and keep putting out classic albums with only 1 or sometimes 2 lame songs on an album but they give you 9 or 10 tracks that are totally awsome. Saxon has totally wiped up Maiden these last 16 years but don't get enough credit for it.

Iron Maiden are living off thier early 80's albums, while writting shitty albums and Eddie's marketing, album covers, merchandise ect... Saxon are giving thier fans kick ass british styled heavy metal.

Saxon leads 16 votes to Maiden's measly 5 votes.

I agree JD about the earlier albums but Saxon have a lot of individual tracks which still go down well at live shows now and are classics. They always seem to have had to work harder to get the recognition they deserve too , which has resulted in them touring extensively playing a lot of smaller venues and has probably helped them keep on  improving by staying in touch with the fan base. They are always avilable to talk to fans at gigs and pose for photos etc.

The Iron Maiden brand seemed to take on a life of it's own and sold it's self during the 80s and up to present. Although I like the latest stuff I find it harder to listen to than the earlier work, & it doesn't have the live crowd pleasers in my opinion.
[J.D. DIAMOND] Thursday, April 21, 2011 12:45:04 PM
With your post, Saxon is up 16 votes to Maiden's 5 votes in this thread, but lets be honest...its because of Saxon's last 16 years and thier last 8 studio albums.

I agree Saxon is better but again its because of the last 16 years(1995 - 2011) because if the thread were about 1980's Maiden vs.  1980's Saxon I'd vote for Iron Maiden hands down, and so would 95% of us all.

Maiden's albums in the 80's were much much better than Saxon's albums in the 80's. But give credit where credit is due...Saxon nowadays is writting better heavy metal/rock material than Iron Maiden is and I think this thread shows it.

Have to say I have seen both bands many times since the 80s, but I prefer Saxon. They don't have the mass appeal of Maiden but this means they   tour all the smaller venues on a regular basis which makes for a better atmosphere than these big stadiums in my opinion. As much as I like Iron maiden I find I have to be in the mood to listen to them, particularly the newer stuff which is quite intense, and the tracks are long, whereas I can listen to Saxon most of the time as the music is more accesible.

I couldn't agree more Guido!  For me Somewhere In Time "SUCKS".  When this piece of shit album came out I was pissed off because I bought the god damn thing. I was 100% totally "butt-hurt".  I was aching for a Powerslave follow up and this crap came out of my speakers? Fuckin "LAME"!!!!  And yeah the current Saxon fuckin wastes the current Maiden,no question. Like I said before, the 1980's Iron maiden blows away the 1980's Saxon. Killers,The Number Of The Beast and Piece Of mind are the 3 albums that are hard to beat, however I think Lionheart and The Inner Sanctum can stand up against the 1980 debut album "Iron Maiden" and Powerslave as well.

And Metallian.....how can you not like Painkiller anymore?? Arrghhh as much as I get sick of hearing about it,I still LOVE the album hands down.  Victoria and I just listened to this entire LP the other day for the billianth time and it keeps getting better and better!!!    "SIGH" to each his own, except for Brian_Evans  (the shithead).

And to that jerk off loser in the Iron Maiden discussion thread...this is not to Guido............Yes I'm posting it here......yes I do like 'A Matter Of life And Death" but its nowhere near the early 80's albums and nowhere even near the current Saxon albums,no where near!!!  You want me off the fence? Come and try and knock me off of it I dare ya HAHA!!!  I'd break that hand of yours so quick you'd never be able to put on another shitty Iron Maiden album again LOL!!!!  Here is a finger not to Guido but to that little boy who comes here because the Iron Maiden forum charges $60.00 bucks a year to be a forum member?

I agree,i remember being saddened by the release of Somewhere in Time too!
After that blow to us metalheads with Turbo ( I bought  it April 3rd 1986),i kept thinking, maybe there is hope with the Maiden release, well, i thought wrong!
1986 was the end of metal as we knew it back then!
It was the big hair and glitter shit, man ol man, what a depressin time that was!
Metallica was the only thing in 86 that feed my metal hunger, but,i could feel there was a turn for the worst comin, and it did!
By the early 90's all my favorite Metal bands went to shit, then came Grunge!UUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHH!FUCK!

Most people got all excited about Painkiller, well,i liked it at first, better than No Prayer by Maiden that is for sure!
But now,i don't really care for Painkiller anymore!
No Prayer, well, that is downstairs in the box of reject cd's,just like the island for reject toys on that christmas show!!
LOFL!
Cheers everybody!
Rock Hard Ride Free!

The Master of all fucking Music!

The Metallian!

Sorry for kind of going off topic!
