You know the new Priest album nostrodamus, it sounds like rock opera, right. I wonder what Rob would sound like Doing an actual opera on stage. I think he would sound awsome!!!!!!!!!! |

Rob is one of the best if not The best vocalist alive today--he doesn't need extra effects to get his point across -- I guess the crew / soundboard think they are adding or even fixing his singing but he doesn't need anyone's help. His voice has changed over the years but he's still the best thing going--he still blows other vocalists out of the water. |

perhaps they added the efects to compensate for the changes his voice has gone thru over time??? dunno, I understand he is older and if he cant hit a note, then he hits a lower one, but thats my opinion. Some people think that it makes the instrument sound "better", but they're not LISTENING, they simply add effects because "that's what your supposed to do" - without actually listening to hear if the instrument even needs it, or if it benefits from the added effect.
It's a waste as far as I'm concerned because if it sounds good already, the effects just kill it.
It would be an entirely different matter if the guys voice sucks, but in this case (Rob Halford's), it doesn't. The guy is one of the best. |

OK but you must to compare to "Bono" from "U2"´- effect
equipment for millions of bucks for him.
Compressor/Limiter, Echo Tapes and Delay Machines
are the standard of today. |

Like many fans out there, I have been listening to Priest a long time (I came on board in 1980).
I have seen them countless times live, but I've noticed that on that last couple of tours particularly, that the use of vocal effects has been alarming. I have listened to the last few video clips online as well to confirm that this is still happening.
Rob Halford is one of, if not THE best vocalist on the planet. WHY the hell would you douse his voice in echoey effects. It sounds so bad that I can't even listen to them live anymore, I didn't go to the last show, mainly because I wasn't in town, but I wouldn't have gone anyway because when I went to the Retribution show, I was appalled at the vocal mix.
Whoever is in charge of Rob's vocal mix should be shot.
Vocals, guitar or ANY effects in rock music should be used tastefully, to enhance it - IF IT NEEDS IT. If the effect doesn't add any additional sonic benefit, than it shouldn't be used.
Too many producers and engineers make this mistake on records and live and I can't believe that they remain in the business. There are so many effects on Rob's voice live, that it takes away from the performance. It's distracting and I can't even listen to it. Listen to the live mix on the Screaming for Vengance tour (any live clip) - it's raw, edgy and kicks ass. (Still too much reverb for my liking) but it's better.
I hope Rob or someone is reading this and takes notice. I'm probably a minority on this one though....
