To be fair, you can go on a walk here without being attacked very often too.
I think my uncle lives on the south island.

That's right Guida haha, no bears. Also, no snakes, no coyotes, no mountain lions, no crazy ass dangerous spiders. You can go on a bush walk/hike without fear of being attacked by something. Unless you happen across a wild boar, which wouldn't happen often lol.
