Yeah I wondered that too. Wood and McGlinchy should have gotten a chance to start and prove themselves in the Paraguay game.

Which makes me wonder why he ( Woods )  wasn't started in the Paraguay game. Fallon was ineffective against Slovakia and Italy and didn't make the most of his chances. Also Mcglinchy didn't even get a chance to come on as a sub, he couldn't have been worse than Killen. Herbert really got our attack wrong. Awesome job everywhere else but our strikers only got one goal between them in three games.

The midfield did do well, but they are aging so it's time for new guys to come through Wood always has an impact of some sort when he comes on, which is great.
LMAO ahhh France. Definitely sounds like something straight from a very bad soap opera.

Our midfield were pretty good. Of our forwards Woods, Bertos and Smeltz were good, Fallon was shit and Killen was invisible.

Highlight of the World Cup for me so far The French performance. Not the best of starts for them with star player Frank Ribery being investigated by the police for paying for sex with underage prostitutes. The rest of their cup being dominated by infighting, players and coach at loggerheads, refusing to train, dressing room arguments, Anelka being sent home, the French Minister of Sport being dispatched by the President of France to sort the squabbling bitches out, finishing last in their pool, Domenich refusing to shake hands with the South African coach and lastly having their first class flights home down graded to economy by the French Football Association. Brilliant, you couldn't write a better script.

You mean the Spain - Chile match? I thought that was a genuine penalty... Although the experts in the studio said that it was a situation where the ref can decide wheter or not he will allow rough play.

Oh, ffs... Yeah, Im rooting for Chile, and Im pissed that the Spanish got two WONDERFULL goals into the Chilean goal... But what makes me root for Chile even more is that they just got a red card, when the ref bought a Spanish simulation. That REALLY kills the game, imo.
[Becks] Thursday, June 24, 2010 10:34:17 PM
Yeah, our strikers are slow compared to some of the speedy dudes on other teams. Plus our midfield is old. But I think we're on a good track, hopefully football isn't forgotten now we're out of the tournament.

Well, NZ finish undefeated yet doesn't go through. It's fair though. You can't expect to go to the next round when you only score two goals in three games, one of which was scored by a defender. Our attack was impotent throughout the tournament. That's something we need to work on.

Yeah, you can be, because even tho they were complete outsiders, they really played with their heart, even tho they probably do lack some experience, which ours did too... But our team didnt play like we know they can. So congrats to Kiwis, and lets hope we wont play a friendly again anytime soon.

Lol, and interesting fact, pointed out by our commentator. In their language, Slovaks call themselves "Slovenci", which as it happens is exactly the same word that we use to refer to ourselves in Slovene. So in a weird, linguistic way, we did qualify!
[Becks] Thursday, June 24, 2010 8:58:01 AM
No one expected anything from NZ, everyone thought we'd get thrashed. Well I think we showed them!!! I'm so proud of our boys, they did so so well.

Becks, get two goals in there, right NOW!
[Becks] Thursday, June 24, 2010 8:27:09 AM
Haha good luck, a very defensive game so far. We're getting gang tackled and shutting Paraguay down pretty fast - that and any balls they get near the goal they shoot in random directions lol.

[_strat_] Thursday, June 24, 2010 8:24:11 AM
If you win and Slovakia wins, then Slovakia is tied in points with Paraguay, which has a better goal difference. So, if you win, win with a big difference.

Yeah, but in 1930 you werent watching football... They didnt have TVs at the retired citizens home.

I have to check my sources, too... Thats what they said on our TV in the football studio. WIkipedia says 13 teams, so youre right there.

And it looks like we shared the third place with the US, since there was no third place match.

Lol, yeah, I heard about that. Not dozen, 16 teams I think, but only four from Europe could be arsed to take the trip. Apparently, our team had to take a ship (since there were no inter-continental flights back then) to Urugvay. They had all the practices aboard, right up until they kicked all the balls into the ocean.

And we also won our group back then, and finished third in the cup... Yup glory days.

Sorry...been rebuilding yet another computer. What fun.

To answer the question, Budred, you heard right. While Becks is right about the Semi's, the reference to the 1930s is also correct. It is the first time since the 1930s that the USA WON ITS WC GROUP! You aren't going deaf or crazy, Bud.

Not to take anything away from them but 1930 was the first official FIFA WC and only a dozen or so countries participated. Still, it was an upset then as well.

Found it. The dude who 'scored' was offside. Fair enough call as far as I could see. The US player struck the ball, it hit the post and went back to him, by which time the dude was in an offside position. Not by much, but I think  it was a fair enough call.
[Becks] Wednesday, June 23, 2010 7:40:44 PM

I was frankly amazed they squeked by today. Notice yet another disqualified goal.  I don't really care too much as the refs have all the say, but I do think what Strat said and I said about inernational sports is applicable, you sometimes have to think was that call biased motivated or a true call?
It does happen in the Olympics and would not supprise me to happen here. Not saying today's call was rubbish, but I do think it's time they backed up their calls with video. All sports do it. Seems way too old school not to. I'm sure HB will come in and tell me what for. I'm a namby pamby lol! HA!! But I was also pissed off tonight about the amount of time commercials now take up in commercial breaks here. Used to be two minutes two seconds, which is all the average human can stand. I timed a break at 3:30 on one show tonight and that is just pissing me off. Make it stop!!! LOL

OK, so I'm not a soccer fan but I am an American. I watched the last 6 minutes of that game
and hearing the announcers talk about how they have not gotten out of the opening round since
1930 and how they needed a (near)miracle to pull it off and then watching them do it. Sorry, but that was
pretty exciting. Good job guys. Congrats!

Yeah, that is true, there are close calls, and sometimes its really down to centimeters... But then again, if you go splitting hairs like that, youre totaly missing the point of the offside rule, which is to prevent a team ganging up in the opponents penalty area, and force them into being a bit more inventive.

IDK... I still think that refs are fine. Not always - most of the times. And players complaining about decisions doesnt change them either.

its still a bitch to get in the right spot and see at the right time.  lots of bloody close calls on offside.  having worked as a linesman (before it was called referees assistant) I know that you will for sure miss things.

Hmmm not a bad idea. I like the idea of a television match official, like a 4th umpire. If there's a call the ref is unsure of, go up there, and with football the good thing is on video review it's often very obvious what has happened, so a decision can be made quicker than people think.

I think what they do in other sports would be nice. Two challenges. If they win, it doesn't count against them, if it stands, they lose one of the two.

Wouldn't stop the flow of the game rather be used sparingly.

Very true Freeze.  There's the rare occasion a ref or ump or judge admits their err.  The example you gave was excellent.  I think the majority of us are a forgiving bunch, just do the right thing even if admitting so won't change the outcome...one does have to find a way to sleep at night you'd think?!?!  lol  You're also dead-on about how the have an air of arrogance about them.  At the same time, these players are the 'stars' of their respect hometown teams, the 'best of the best' if you will, most (if not all) of these players have ego's to match!!  It takes a lot to stand up to these characters...not defending them, just an observation.  I can see why they get physically attacked at times lol worse yet, I remember hearing about a goalie who was attacked and killed after he gave up a goal!!  I bet they run straight home after each match!!  lol

Screwed by the English TWICE today. First when theyve beaten our boys, now their penal colony screwed our southern brothers... Someone has to consider bombing them right now... I hope uncle Putin is reading this.

There has been some craptacular umpiring at this world cup, due to the human error element of things. It's not so much arrogance, but the fact that what the ref says goes cos there is no third umpire of any kind. In saying that, I do believe FIfa need to get with the times and start using video refs for contentious or 50/50 calls. That's just Fifa being very old school though.   [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by Deep Freeze from Wednesday, June 23, 2010 1:19:41 PM)

Strat and I agreeing..??!?!?  HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! Please!!! HAHAHAHAHHA!! I really doubt the US team had a planned target (the official) if they were to lose. Seems to me that they would be wasting their time actually playing this game if that were the case. I mean, just mail it in and blame others....although THAT might be more entertaining...HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!        ANYHOOO-

You know you do make sense, Ron. I have already said I like the human element as well. I guess the only thing these soccer guys can (or SHOULD) do is OWN UP to it when they blow a call. Case in point;

Recently here in the US, a baseball umpire cost a pitcher a place in history with a very bad call. Replays clearly showed he had blown the call. The next day, not only did he take ownership and apologize, there was a VERY emotional meeting prior to the next game between him and the young man that had lost due to his call. The umpire in question was actually tearful and SO very remorseful. It took a real man to admit what he did, especially given that the player lost a spot in the history books!

Seems to me that these soccer fellows think themselves "above" question. They are arrogant and, frankly, they seem to be terribly inadequate given that this is a "world" event! One would think that the FIFA people would try to get more qualified officials. Just my observation. As I readily admit, I have NO idea what is going on and I am relying solely on the comments of the so-called "professionals" on my TV. That said, they are STILL going on about the poor officiating.
