They aren't by any chance celebrating the Cricket match are they Becks?? A game that goes that long might take extra celebrating. LMAO.

Morning everyone! A bit of a horrible weekend sleep wise here, I've had to call noise control twice for the same people. They got a warning on friday night/saturday morning (at 2:30am!) and last night they should have gotten an instant $1000 fine. Bastards.
Yay for a good band practice Freeze

Howdy do, kiddies!! Happy Saturday to all. Had a great practice last night and dragged myself home after TEN!! HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh man!! Stepping WAAAAAAY out of my box these days, no??

Like the minor changes to the Board. Looks like Murray is using a PACIFIC server?? Sweet! And soon....we shall take over all of it....HAAAAAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[Vaillant 3.0] Friday, February 12, 2010 10:50:53 PM
It used to show Central time. If it were midnight there, it would be 10 pm on the West Coast.

So now the Noticeboard is now on Pacific time. Interesting...

[spapad] Friday, February 12, 2010 5:06:35 PM
While I don't pay much attention to the time on the board Vail, I just glanced and it says it's 5:05 pm, it's 8:05 here so it must be showing Cali time right now.

Indeed. Usually my "corrections" are merely to poke fun. Generally, I understand that not everyone writes the way I do, nor should I expect everyone here to do so. I enjoy discussions regarding English composition and origin and whatnot simply because it is a passion of mine. You would be amazed at the number of members on this site that have improved their writing simply by engaging me. I do not mean that as a boast! I have had more than one PM saying so and I have noticed the change when I see certain posts. Honestly, I think that is marvelous.

Spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, sentence structure and all the rest mean something to me. That is what one might call a "quirk". Obviously, it is not something that is common! As far as this place, I use English as a tool for fun AND for educating. There is no rule that says people here have to listen to me but, apparently, many do. Good on them! Why anyone would not wish to improve the way they write and speak is a true mystery to me. Self-improvement is vital for development. Of course, I do understand that there are those that do not care for THAT, either! HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am appalled at what passes for communication these days. Perhaps that is my age showing but I think it is just disgusting to aspire to speak like an idiot yet, so many do.  Dialect notwithstanding, people (especially the young) seem to take some sort of misguided pride in speaking as if they never left the fifth grade. I suppose it is as you said...individual taste. Or, as I believe, no taste at all.

Neat post that you put in there, Mike. Some interesting stuff about the English language that I didnt know yet. Thanx

I thought I was the only one in this joint who could do English properly

You'r right: "Know thy audience"

On rockfora I do a lotta slang and contractions, cause that's sorta the style; but if necessary, I can be fully standard in both American and British.

I do however agree with you, Mike, that some members here are too casual or rabid and write abominable posts that often are barely understandable. If I write a post, I may use humor, sarcasm, metaphors etc, but I always have some message to convey. Why waste our time with just some arbitrary raving and ranting ?

Well, I guess it's all a question of individual taste and priorities, and the more members there are, the more variation there'l be. Some members write stuff that interests me, and some not - and I'm OK with that. Accordingly I can't expect that my stuff is interesting to all members.

Getting back to the "and", I like to use it in the sense that was described in Point 7 in Dictionary.com, "implying continuation".

And so it will remain with me

Good evening, ladies and gents.

Has anyone checked the time on the Noticeboard lately? Right now says it's 23:01 (Pacific Standard Time), and it would usually say 01:01 the next day or something. Is the time now set according to your time zones?

Two questions for you Deep Freeze:  1) Are you an english professor?  (You're extremely knowledgeable and articulate!  I like it.)  2)  If someone says "Where are you at?"  Are they dangling a participle?  I used to have fun telling people to be careful, they were dangling their participles.  Some would even look down.

Morning Becks! I'm just about to head off to bed... 11 31pm here in Africa.
Have you ever used one of those exercise balls? I had one when I was pregnant last and I got one for my birthday. So I decided to use it, thinking nothing of it other than it would be fun to use in between cycling/gym sessions. So I did a quick 40 min workout on it and went about my business. That was Monday.. I"m still stiff! Who'd have thought! So this leads me to believe it is an excellent piece of equipment!

Oh and please, please, please.. do the ostrich pic for me.. pretty please, this girl is in need of a humungus belly laugh!

Morning everyone! A rainy thursday here, but I've been good and have done a 50 minute workout, followed by a quick run with the dog. I'm off to do some drumming soon, I think my snare drum needs a bit of tinkering too, damnit. Also going to do some drawing today, I have a pic of Jimmy Page that needs some work done on it lol. Hope everyone is having a great day!
[Deep Freeze] Wednesday, February 10, 2010 12:19:22 PM
Ah Nicky, my friend. Here, at last, we must part ways of the mind! While in today's view it is considered "acceptable" to use a conjunction to begin a sentence, grammatically it is NOT encouraged. Beginning a sentence with a conjunction tends to lead to one of two things; run-on sentences or short, choppy ones. It is also terribly informal. Now, if your intent is to address an issue with informality, it is acceptable and has reached the point where it is very prevalent in today's writing. The old adage, "Know thy audience" applies in this case.

In the 1600-1700's, it was perfectly acceptable to use a conjunction to begin a sentence. As language developed and people became more aware of education, vocabulary and  social status, the use of conjunctions to start sentences was thought to be poor grammar and a lack of proper education. It was also believed that English was inferior to Latin and should be changed.  This lead to certain "rules" that really are not necessarily rules at all, but more like positions of thought. While it was noble, in thinking, to adapt to a more "Latin based" form of language, English is actually a decendant of German and so many of the "rules" simply do not "fit" in a technical sense.

The same holds for ending a sentence with a preposition, although that one is far more important in MY mind!! Many times, words thought to be "prepositions" are really an adverbial particle (part of the verb) and, therefore, not really prepositions at all. Verbs can retain much , if not all, of their properties when used in certain contexts.

OK then! I have made my statement on the matter. What is acceptable and what is proper are far different things, depending on whom it is to which you are speaking.....HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeg ka også bidrage med lidt dansk til denne flersprogede fest.

Joe, very thoughtful and moving post you wrote there for us. Thanx ! Thinking of you and your close ones, and wishing you the very best

And Guido,    yes, one can fully standardly start a sentence with "and" :

7. (used to introduce a sentence, implying continuation) also; then: And then it happened.

- Dictionary.com

So that sort of wraps it up for the moment as far as my concerns are concerned

Nicky.

Happy Wednesday, ladies and gents!!

Looks like I now rule the roost message count-wise. Almost a year's worth of messages taken out and I'm still within the 10,000 posts-range. Children, this is what too much sinning in the Sinful thread (among other things) can do to you.
[Deep Freeze] Wednesday, February 10, 2010 7:39:55 AM
I really don't think it matters one way or another. I mean, "date joined" is far from important. We all know one another and how long we have been here. Perhaps it is a good thing? It might give the new members a little less pressure.  I think the real focus should be on how many FRIENDS one has. THAT is an important statistic. That is really where you can judge the value of someone on this site.

I also think the number of "ignores" should be dropped. As I have said many times, ANYONE can click "ignore" but the "friends" button is a very, very selective thing.

Hey thats cool man,I've never really been into live albums either,Unleashed In The East to me is the best live album ever even if it was doctored up in the studio or whatnot,I still think its the best live album,I also like Live Evil Black Sabbath 1982 but of course Unleashed is best. But other than that,I really don't care for live albums that much.

I never was grasped by Nostradamus so I'm still in the Angel Of Retribution mode and it feels like its been 5 years since they released anything new to me,so I am really wanting a new album but I think they will be working on it later this year but then again they may do a Nostradamus tour and if that happens,a new album will not be out until 2012 I'm guessing,by then I'll bet you'll be craving some new Judas Priest! lol!

If he takes the board down to just a year, not that I would miss some of it, but some of it was really funny too..........Well, if he does(and he will), I guess we will  all have the same date joined. Maybe it's a good thing, but I'm not sure how I feel about it. Torn a bit.
Now, what I would like to know is, does that mean all the ignores we got from multi profiles are gone too! HA!!! NO WAY!! It's kind of messed up like so many sites are right now. I suppose we all just need to move on into the cyber future, and forget about it. LOL

Angel of Retribution and Nostradamus are both still in heavy rotation  at my place and I can wait a bit loger for an album. I still havent listened to the new live album in full yet. Im not one for live albums though...although im listening to Unleashed right now LOL
