Dave Holland wasn't a terrible drummer, he had his moments on Priest Live! like Head Are Gonna Roll, Desert Plains, and Ram it Down. But Scott Travis is much more accomplished. Holland barely hit his drums, I didn't like looking at him. I was so relieved when Scott Travis joined. I mean, c'mon, listen to the drums on Rapid Fire on Live '98... It got so bad for Priest that they had to use electronic drums on Blood Red Skies and Hard as Iron. A low point for the band, not to mention Love You to Death, Love Zone and Monster of Rock. Possibly the three worst Priest songs ever. Scott Travis is awesome, he freaking blew away Vinny Appice and his pathetic 1984 drumset with about 20 drums. Travis and 7pc kit kicked his ass. It was a real treat to see Priest and Queensryche together because Scott Rockenfield is also a great drummer and to see them on the same bill was awesome. Dave Holland should have been replaced after Screaming for Vengeance. Travis has a lot of respect for Les Binks drum parts and doesn't change them much, but he tears up Dave Hollands drum parts.
Les Binks was badass, the drums on Exciter were way ahead of their time. I also love the drums on White Heat Red Hot, Delivering the Goods and the drums on Burnin Up are crazy, esp the beat underneath the guitar solos on that song.

I have heard the same thing about the extra drummer,but from a later album. Probably not true live,but studio,who knows??

I agree with you on Hollands drumming,as well as Binks. But Travis brought a new dimension to Priest (not that they needed it ) But I prefer the heavier sound of Travis ,they just sound better to me with him,tighter and more aggressive. Travis is a powerful player, easily recognized with his style(and I`m a guitarist). If my chops were as good as they were just 10 years ago,I would kill for the chance to play along with Travis!! Hell ,I would grab a bass ,just to get that groove going!! I was lucky enough to be able to see Holland,but never Binks. I`m not saying that Preist wouldn`t be where they are today,but I just dig what Scott does better.

| Nothing against Dave's drumming, he was ok but I always felt he lacked something and didn't quite fit in with the rest of Priest. Plus there was just something about him that always bugged me, of course now I know why. Scott brings a much heavier sound that fits with Priest so much better. I love hearing Scott play the old songs. I've been seeing Priest in concert since 1981 and I much prefer the drumming now to back then. I didn't find it that way. I found he gets much more into the songs and is very flashy. He puts more elbow grease into it. Besides...I like Priest songs when they sound hard and heavy

Unfortunately, I missed Testament and Motorhead. Heaven and Hell were good, but after all these years, Vinny Appice still gets on my nerves and I wish they had a better drummer. It looked to me that he was getting on Geezers nerves too, he is very distracting. He is no Scott Travis that is for sure. Heaven and Hell would be better off with a drummer that has a more linear style that doesn’t overplay like Appice. Iommi was great, Dio still has his voice. Sign of the Southern Cross was long and boring then there was a drum solo.
With all the great songs Dio and Black Sabbath have, why a drum solo? I’d rather have heard another song.
Priest was tight, had terrific sound, they were having fun on stage. You can tell they love Texas. I love when they all go up and down together and are in a synch of sonic fury. Judas Priest heavy metal sounds so heavy at these volumes. When I’m a Priest concert, I always think to myself that there is no band heavier than they are, esp live. There is nobody heavier than Priest in concert. Their music makes me enter a state of euphoria, better than any drug. I start jumping up and down and people don’t like to stand near me. I love the way (good) hard rock and heavy metal sound live. Even a song like Angel sounds so heavy, man I love that song. Don’t understand why it was never a single. A very, very professional heavy metal sound, it was LOUD, but clear. Weather was good, esp for an August night in Texas. The band opened with Prophecy then slammed thru Metal Gods and Eat me Alive. Great drum sound, Rob was on top his game. The band played at my favorite outdoor amphitheater here called Starplex (Superpages.com now) a terrific place for hard rock/metal shows. Guessing, I would say there were between 10,000 to 11,000 people there. Last yr they brought back I’m a Rocker and Hot Rockin’ which I have always liked, this year they brought back Dissident Aggressor, Eat me Alive, Hammer and Anvil, Hell Patrol and Rock Hard.
I’m proud to say it was my 13th time to see Judas Priest, and this was one of their best.

| One ticket for the San Bernadino, Calif show on Aug 30th. Orchestra 2, dead center, row W, seat 30. Excellent location. Can't go because my truck was wrecked in a freak accident and have not been able to find a good deal on a new truck, and with none of my friends being metalheads like they SHOULD BE, looks like I'm SOL on finding a ride down to the show. So, I'm putting it up for sale. Buyer needs to pick it up in person, I don't trust the USPS these days. Email me for price - yes it's reasonable, less than what I paid for it. |

That said, we're still going to be staying at the Langham hotel in Auckland on the 7th, the night Priest were supposed to play Auckland. All digits still crossed for Sydney. 19 sleeps to go! |
