David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar?

Sick guitar work by Van Halen.

So true. Also, you sat all the way through St. Anger?
I've never done it. If I want to listen to that I watch the DVD.
It sounds better. I think that album has some pretty heavy music, it's just the
god-awful production that literally sickens me when I (try) to listen to it. I saw
them on that tour and thank goodness they only played 1 song from it. Actually,
it was the Summer Sanitarium Tour but that was their latest LP at the time.

It doesn't exist. I've never met them. I did see them though, unfortunately it was without Dave.
It was their first tour with Sammy Hagar. Monsters of Rock Tour 1988. Badass concert.
Van Halen

I'd say by 78 or 79 it wouldn't take much to blow Sabbath off the stage. Ozzy Osbourne would have been blown away before he got anywhere near the stage.

Hey here's a challenge. Put on VH3 with Cherone and see if you can sit through the whole album without turning it off. It's a test of willpower. A couple of months ago I sat there and listened to St Anger right through. That was tough.

I have all the albums, even Van Halen 3 with Gary Cherone. I like some of it. lol! I would consider the first four albums heavy metal but thats just my opinion. I've heard people say they blew Sabbath off the stage during that tour.   [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by jimmyjames from Sunday, May 02, 2010 6:42:00 PM)

Van Halen to me is just this kind of dorky 80s party music. I know EVH is one of the best ever and they sold millions of albums. I have most of the Roth albums but I haven't really listened to them in the last 15 years. I just find 90% their songs meaningless and stupid. And they're definately not metal, don't know how they got that gig supporting Sabbath in the late 70s, Snowblind vs Dance The Night Away, what a contrast. Weird.

Maybe Cherone knocked Alex in the head during one of those out of control moves he makes. Looks like he has on a neck brace.

This video is crap quality but excellent Van Halen.

Brian, why would you do that?(LOL)  You should have put that in the crappiest album thread.
That would rival  Ron's posts there. I thought I hated Gary Cherone, now I'm positive.

[onetreehill] Thursday, April 22, 2010 8:50:43 PM
One of my favourite small venue concerts was Sammy Hagar - about a week before I saw my first Judas Priest concert (Hell Bent for Leather tour) - and Hagar has some great work behind him (Montrose and early solo) but Diamond Dave is Van Halen.
[Budred] Wednesday, January 20, 2010 3:38:13 PM
DAVID LEE ROTH
[FreakyMetalHead] Monday, January 18, 2010 7:54:34 PM
Wow....and all this time I thought that guy was Ted Danson.
[jimmyjames] Monday, January 18, 2010 5:09:15 PM
Also at about 2.17 after rolling down the stairs Cherone trips over backwards and the security guy has to catch him. This could possibly be the most embarrasing minute or so in music history. Gary Cherone = Tool.
[jimmyjames] Monday, January 18, 2010 3:21:44 PM
Not sure but at 2.38 Gary lies down on the stage and looks as though he's ready for Eddie to bone him.

Here's some more Gary Cherone wackiness. At 2.03 Gary rolls down the stairs.

Everybody giggles when they see or hear anything associated with Gary Charone. He's a dick. Check out some of Extremes music videos. Priest should have had a Gary Charone era when Halford was out of the band.

Gary Cherone era ... sorry, I giggled when I read that.  Forgot all about him fronting VH for a while.

You know, Hagar was musically superior to Roth which led to better "quality" music.
But I will take the goofy, fun-loving Roth-era songs any day ... they were good and they were FUN!!
[jimmyjames] Saturday, November 21, 2009 10:52:16 PM

People are always arguing over whether David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar was the better lead singer for Van Halen. I can't understand why the Gary Cherone era is not being debated with as much intensity.

After seeing Van Hagar headlining the Monsters of Rock tour in 1988 at the Pontiac Silverdome, I have boycotted EVERYTHING Hagar has done!! He had the nerve to TALK the lyrics to "Running with the Devil" and "Jamies Crying"!! I was in complete disbelief screaming WHAT THE !! He completely BUTCHERED 2 of my favorite Van Halen songs. Alex and Eddie were too drunk/high to care apparently. I took it as a HUGE slap in the face to each and every old VAN HALEN fan in the audience. They even let Hagar perform some of his solo songs during that show and he still had the balls to do that? I lost all respect for him and refuse to listen to anything he does anymore.

Seriously, if Ripper had done something like that  (which he NEVER would have because he has too much respect for Priest), KK, Glenn, Ian and Scott would have dragged him off stage and pounded him until he SANG the songs CORRECTLY! But PRIEST has CLASS and RESPECTS their fans and took their time to find someone who could fill Rob's incredible shoes.

So for me, it's David Lee Roth! Sammy can take his huge ego and shove it!
[british.steel] Thursday, June 18, 2009 2:32:31 PM
i dont know, i like zakk wylde and his work with ozzy was great. but in my opinion his style is a little annoying because all the pinch harmonics just seem very unneccesary. EVH passes wylde by aLONG shot
[Diamond Jim] Wednesday, June 17, 2009 6:53:25 PM
Left in the dust by Zakk Wylde????    Please, I don't think so. Eddie rules!!!!
[Amboydukes] Wednesday, June 17, 2009 11:22:31 AM
EVH WAS influential. WAS is key word. He has been left in the dust by the likes of Zakk Wylde an others. I believe EVH has lost his creativity. Give me the guitar work the Nugent does on the Craveman album any day of the week over anything EVH has done in 20 years.
[british.steel] Wednesday, June 17, 2009 11:15:38 AM
and EVH isnt the greatest guitarist ever amboydukes, i agree with you. but i wouldnt call him boring, his style is unique and exciting. he is very very influential and the tapping is just awesome. i think their are many players better than him, such as K.K. downing, and Glenn Tipton, :)
[british.steel] Wednesday, June 17, 2009 10:34:24 AM
Exactly! if Eddie Van Halen were to die or sumthin (which wouldnt happend cuz gods are immortal...hahah) they would have to stop. theres no replacing him, much like when Bohnam died in 1980, led zepppelin stopped. sure they have had a handful of concerts since, but u will never find another EVH, not even in a tribute band. lol
[Amboydukes] Wednesday, June 17, 2009 9:34:23 AM
I think overall that VH was better with DLR than Hagar....but. VH with Hagar did a version of Wild Thing during a concert, that was recorded on King Biscuit Flower Hour and I believe can be found on an Import, that was awesome. EVH and Hagar traded off soloing and they out right jammed on it. This could not have been done with DLR. You can find VH with Hagar doing Wild Thing at other concerts but the one off of King Biscuit was the best. Also, please no one refer to EVH as the greatest guitarist ever. He has not done anhything on guitar worthy of that mantel since before DLR left the band. His guitarmanship now can best be described as BORING.
[Diamond Jim] Tuesday, June 16, 2009 9:47:14 PM
Exactly british.steel!! Without Eddie Van Halen they would be nothing! He's the creative force behind the band. They were fine without DLR but if Eddie was not there they would be HIS-TO-RY!

Damn i hope not, at the show they were on fire man, honestly one of the best shows ive seen. They were talking about putting out a new album with Roth and i hope it goes through. That would rule!!! 20 years later....again with Roth!!! But who knows maybe we can blame it all on Eddie's kid Wolfgang, hahaha. Its all that little basterds fault!!! He was actually a pretty talented bassist for being in his early 20's i think maybe even younger.

HAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!! Oh, I do understand. I truly do.

Roth's voice is a big part of VH for me as well. It reminds me of their first couple albums. Eddie is a genius, I know that. He is great. but Roth and his style helped to define VH and they have not been the same without him. In fact, they are not the same WITH him anymore. The special something they had in '78 is gone, from what I have heard.

I agree, Sammy could blow away Roth in a singing contest. But I feel Roth is the right man for VH. He's got the act for the show, seeing them live with Roth was the VH i want to see again. By the way  DF, i try and let it go, but certian people tend to grind my gears the wrong way, it really cheeses me off when people rip on Halford. He's the Metal God for crying out loud.

To be very honest, I have never really considered DLR a "great vocalist" at all. I think he is a showman and a TREMENDOUS front man. An entertainer. A "pretty face" (years ago) that the ladies love. Vocally speaking, he is not all that good (as far as I am concerned) but he has that ability to work a crowd that makes him a great "Rock Front man". Hagar has far more vocal control and musicianship but I am not a fan of him at all.

Roth is more like Mick Jagger for me. Jagger is not a "great" vocalist , either. He is an accomplished showman. He also is a musical genius and I say that  because he has the longevity to back it up! Anyway, to stay on "topic", I would vote Roth all the way. I enjoyed VH when they first hit the scene and stopped caring when Roth left.

I hate Van Halen, and Sammy Hagar, don't like either bands or vocalists. But I would have to go with David Lee Roth as being the better vocalist, and better persona for the band "Van Halen".

Thanks DF, some guys arent happy unless you beat what you meant into their brains, like a certian member who has a hate on for Halford.

Buddy get over yourself, im just saying that IMO (DO YOU KNOW WHAT IMO MEANS??.....IN MY OPINION) DLR is a better Vocalist than Hagar. The ORINGINAL line up was with David Lee Roth so in saying that, he was a part of their original sound. They became more popish with Hagar. I like i few songs with hagar but i like the older stuff better. You don't agree with me then fine thats your opinion, but your not calling me out on shit, your going to call someone out on their opinion? Everyone has different opinions on here man, you'll notice that after you 20th post, so either accept it or maybe find a new website, you wont last on here "calling people out"

Sorry man but I have to call you out on this one. Eddie Van Halen is the most influential and original guitar player of the last 30 years and you say David Lee Roth is Van Halen. I don't think so. Eddie Van Halen is the sound and always will be. Yeah Roth is part of the original sound but they continued on just fine with Sammy Hagar. You can replace Roth but Eddie can never be replaced.
